Cannon Ball

Earlier today I had to visit a house in Worcestershire to do with work and got to talking with the owner about my hobby of constructing historic building which are then cast in resin and sold as wargame scenery. Before leaving he showed me a small cannon ball - about the size of a cricket ball which he says came from an old fish and chip shop in St. Johns, Worcester. Could it be from The Alfred Taylor House, St. Johns? See this link

The cannon ball was similar to the one illustrated with a knobbly texture and grey/brown colouring. There were no obvious markings. It was difficult to assess the weight, but certainly not something you would want to get in the way of.

Any ideas as to its weight or poundage based on these sketchy details?

It is always interesting to see such an artefact 'in the flesh'. On the way back I also saw some beautiful old wood/stone barns and expect I will take a drive out later this year with my trusty camera.

Architecture of the Russian North

Earlier today I accompanied my Wife into Worcester City Centre to pick up some new clothes that she had ordered for an up and coming wedding. Once we had finished shopping I had a quick look around the charity and discount book stores to see if there was anything new. I came across a second-hand, hard-backed book called Architecture of the Russian North 12th - 19th Centuries published by Aurora Art Publishing, Leningrad in 1976.

The book was slightly water damaged but made up for this by being crammed packed with beautiful and evocative colour images of various Russian buildings and landscapes. At just £2.50 I fell in love with it and just had to share some of the photos.

The text is English, with some additional notes and reference pages in Russian. Of the 200 pages plus there are photos of churches, official buildings and even peasant huts all of which just cry out to modelled. My collection of architectural reference books mainly cover Great Britain and Europe so this is a very welcome addition.

The Pledge 2012

Last year I entered a regiment of 16 Limited Edition, Alternative Armies/Flintloque Dwarves in the Lead Painters League Season five, see Princess Juliana Chaseur Elite - This year, in fact last night I read that season six has just been announced, full details and revised rules are available here

My immediate reaction was to start painting in anticipation of all ten rounds, but common sense finally got the better of me. I just have too much on my plate at the moment and to place myself under this much time pressure would be silly. Even so it was a close fought thing with imagined units of Flintloque Undead, Todoroni and even a set of Tolkien inspired figures planned. However I have come up with a compromise one that I hope gives me the impetus to paint up a little more of my famed 'Lead Mountain'.

I PLEDGE that throughout 2012 I will model, base and paint ten groups of miniatures (between 5 and 10 figures) and record the results here on this Blog. "My name is Tony Harwood and I AM a Wargamer!"

In addition to the promised Masterclass Articles on Barking Irons Online and various commissions I will start this pledge with another group of eight Flintloque Dwarves in February, some Undead Savant Bog Orcs in March and either Todoroni or Ferach for April. Other Pledge projects will include some Ostrian Hounds and even a dusty old box of Lowland Rats. Keep tuned-in for more details.

Where as I feel the Lead Painters League may be too much, particularly over the next two to three months a longer time scale and this list of stalled or old miniature painting projects is just the kick-start I need.

So, who's game for joining me. I suggest that we all have similarly stalled miniature painting projects - let's make 2012 the year that all that bare lead finally gets some paint!

Studio Ghibli Nausicaa Book at Forever People

Earlier today my Wife and I had a day out in Cardiff. After meeting up with my Mother-in-Law and Sue's Brother and Sister-in-Law for lunch, Sue and I had time to window shop before making our way back to Worcester.

I had the opportunity to visit Forbidden Planet on Castle Street (just opposite Cardiff Castle) and saw some fantastic Studio Ghibli books. The first being The Art of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, while another was The Art of Porco Rosso as well as others. Each of the hard-bound books were on sale for £25.00 each and although out of my price-range were crammed-packed with stunning black & white and colour illustrations. Real eye-candy! It is difficult to do a full review on just a couple of minutes browsing, but my impression of each of these books was WOW, just beautiful and I would love to have any one of them adorn my bookshelf.

A simple GOOGLE search will give some ideal of these fantastic animated feature films and books which are well worth checking out.

I am aware that posts so far this year have been a little scarce. However I have not been idle and promise that all of my work over the last month will soon be published here (and elsewhere). Sorry that I am unable to say any more but I assure regular readers that each and every project will be worth the wait and I am now awaiting clearance to post links to this Blog.

Surprisingly the last two or three months of 2011 were quiet with a lot of my time being devoted to personal projects, all this changed as 2012 started with a Bang and although I am not complaining - if only the commissions and project were better spaced out.

"Why Flintloque?"

Over the last twelve months I have been asked by a number of people "Why Flintloque?"

It is strange but until asked and having to think of an answer, I had never given it much thought. Like most gamers the inspiration for choosing one period, one scale and even one army when it comes to wargaming is usually a very personal decision and as such will obviously be influenced by many things.

I've already written about my model making heritage - my Father building balsa and tissue aeroplanes then ships in bottles - something that I have always admired. Then my Grandfather and his huge model railway layout running round and round the spare bedroom. I have fond memories of seeing The Lord of the Isles chuffing around the rather bare terrain! Then my Uncle who built beautiful 1/72nd scale planes and in particular American jets.

All this is a little round-about. But then in the early 70's I was introduced to wargaming. As a spotty schoolboy I was allowed to join a wargame club at Swansea University and gamed with hundreds of early Airfix American Civil War figures mounted on to beer mats which were moved over green dyed sheets with chalk roads and rivers.

During this formative period I first played Dungeons and Dragons. My introduction to Role Playing. In addition as a member of the club I took part in a huge re-fight of Waterloo where I took personal command of a battalion of British Readcoats. This game covered the whole floor of a Senior Common Room floor and took three days to complete!

Much later I played Warhammer (Mk. 1 - the edition with three separate soft bound books) and became a regular reader of Games Workshop's White Dwarf.

Once again a little around the houses. Fast forward - and married, moved away from Swansea and now the proud Father of two I still painted and collected toy soldiers, mainly GW Dwarves which are still one of my all-time favourites.

It was about 10 or 12 years ago that I first became aware of Flintloque - the original Flintloque boxed set, but at £20.00 I preferred to test the water with a couple of blisters of Orcs which were painted with bright Goblin-green skin!

I was hooked and very soon I had the original boxed set with all figures based and painted - based on 2p coins and not the square metal bases - something I have stuck to. I also picked up quite a few discounted sets from the now defunct model store Beatties. Beatties in Bristol. Do you remember them?

My very understanding Wife couldn't understand what I saw in these Ugly Miniatures, her words and not mine. And something that she still can't understand.

My collection grew with regular purchases and even the odd themed terrain piece - although in the main I made do with my existing Warhammer terrain. At about the same time I became aware of the Society of Fantasy and Science Fiction Wargamers and their in-house magazine Ragnarok as well as the original Flintloque Yahoo site, where as Dampfpanzerwagon I was introduced to like-minded gamers.

Dampfpanzerwagon was the name given to some Flintloque steam tanks that I had built and which feature in Ragnarok issue 41. A very rare publication! Some of the comments and images have appeared on this Blog and if all goes to plan - should be re-published soon.

I think the next major leap forward was the conception of my Dwarf or Great Sauerkraut War background where I envisaged a Dwarf vs. Dwarf Civil war using Flintloque rules and miniatures but a distinctly new background. The 2nd Sauerkraut Wars took on a life of its own with many regiments of Dwarves being painted up and based in readiness to take to the battlefield. The project remains active and one day I hope to not only game the background but campaign it as well.

So moving on from the Ragnarok article, joining the Yahoo group and paining hundreds of miniatures - two things happened. First I was asked to model some terrain pieces and in payment I was given a huge box of Flintloque miniatures - hundreds of blisters and boxed sets which I have now either painted, swooped or sold. Secondly I started to construct Flintloque scale terrain pieces. The original Flintloque miniatures were closer to 1/48th than 28mm.

So here endeth the history lesson. But still "Why Flintloque?"

I think I enjoy the quirkyness of both the figures and the rules. The back stories appeal to my sense of humour and the fan-fiction is even better - just take a look at any of Rogipoo's posts on the new Flintloque Yahoo site - The Notables to see what I mean.

I also believe that Flintloque has a cross-genre appeal. Napoleonic/Fantasy - even Undead/Fantasy that just presses all the right buttons for me. I am sure that 'serious' Napoleonic modellers must look-down-their-noses at some of the Flintloque combinations but for me this is what I like about the game.

In addition the chunky or even ham-fisted miniatures have an appeal that I enjoy collecting and painting. In fact the very chunkiness that some criticise is one of the very reasons I enjoy collecting them. The over-the-top sculpting compliments my similarly over-the-top painting style and as stated so many time - this is a personal hobby and I enjoy myself.

Finally - the friends - some whom I meet in person others who I have only ever spoken to via the Web, Blogs and Yahoo sites are such a strong and supportive bunch of characters, many of which I would never have met if I had not taken that plunge back over a decade ago and bought that single blister of Orcs in Redcoats.

Ray Harryhausen an Animated Life

Another post listing some of the presents I had this Christmas. This time the Ray Harryhausen book An Animated Life by Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton.

The book was a gift from my Brother-in-Law, my Sister-in-Law and my Nephew and Niece from Hastings. Thank you Dave and Fee. It is a huge coffee-table book full of black and white images and over 300 pages full of interesting illustrations and notes. According to the Official Ray Harryhausen Web Site this is the fifth book in the series written by Ray and Tony.

I had previously seen the Art of Ray Harryhausen in Waterstones and loved the illustration but at the time was not able to afford the list price. In addition I quite like the Ray Harryhausen's Fantasy Scrapbook all of which are detailed on the Official Web Site.

As a visual treat this was one of my favourite Christmas presents and nearly one month on, I still love to browse the images and text. Maybe it's just me but every image conjures up a childhood memory - King Kong, Jason fighting the Skeletons, the Kraken appearing from the sea or Talos coming to life. Great memories all well detailed in this great book.

Any Google image search for Ray Harryhausen will reward you with hundreds of fantastic images.

Sabotage and Subversion by Ian Dear

I have already written about some of the books I had as gifts for Christmas. This was a 12 O'clock present from my Wife who had picked the book up in a remainder book shop in Bromsgrove. I did not start reading it straight away, but picked it up about a week ago to have a browse through. What a revelation and a great read. The story of both SOE (Special Operations Executive) and OSS (the American Version) during World War 2.

The small paper-backed book is split into logical sections with the first few chapters dealing with the set up of both operations and how they recruited, trained and equipped their operatives. The next chapters each deal with a separate action or activity, including the background to the Heavy Water Factory sabotage and the Chindits in the Far East.

For me it reads like a real Boys-Own adventure story, well written and informative and a real first class book on a subject that gets very little emphasis.

Since reading the book (and in preparing this short Blog entry) I have come across a number of more detailed reviews of the book (and in fact the series of books by Cassell). This is one that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Wargame Shows for 2012

For Christmas I was given a comic calendar to try and keep track of my part-time work hours. This morning I thought I would update it by adding some Wargame Show dates to it;

Penkridge Wargame Tabletop Sale
Sunday, January 22nd from 10am - 1pm I am looking at attending, although at this time I cannot be certain.

Gloucester Show
Sunday, January 29th with full details yet to be released I saw initial information over on the Lead Adventure, once again I cannot be certain of attending.

Alumwell Wargame Show
Sunday March 11th. I have visited this particular show every year since it moved to the Alumwell Sports Centre and have every intention of attending this year. I have often written about how friendly this show is and it is my opportunity to meet up with old friends and have a chat.

Salute 2012
Saturday 21st April In all the years that Salute has been at Excel I have avoided it as I do not like the venue or the length of time it takes to get to this side of London from Worcester. With the Olympics and the improved road network I am actually thinking about making the trek this year. Still not certain, but do not be surprised if I actually get there this year!

Games Expo, Birmingham
25th, 26th and 27th of May. Once again a show that I have followed for the last four or five years and enjoyed every one of my visits. I would expect to be there on the Sunday, but this may chance and if it does I will update the Blog.

Scale Model World, Telford
A Must-See show for me and one of my hobby highlights. In previous years I have attended on the Sunday and expect the same to be true this year. For any modeller who has not seen this particular show - I would recommend that you book the time off now and allow yourself a very special treat.

Other shows maybe added as the year progresses, but for now these are my show priorities in 2012.

Stone Barn - A 28mm Masterclass

Modelled to accompany my Flintloque miniature collection, such a simple model could easily be used for games from a wide variety of historical and fantasy settings.

These two images were taken at Games Expo 2011 which was held in Birmingham (UK) and shows a simple stone barn that was featured on the Warmachine Tournament gaming table. It was the inspiration for my own Stone Barn.

I have no hesitation in admitting that this is my favourite Flintloque themed building to date. I got a real buzz out of first drawing the plans and then building the model. I hope you enjoy the article.

2012 - Looking Forward

Around this time of year there are many Blog posts looking back at the year just finished and listing various New Years Resolutions. I thought I would be different and look forward to 2012.

I hope to continue with this Blog detailing forthcoming modelling projects and commissions. When I first started, I was unsure as to how the postings would develop but actually I have enjoyed the different paths it has taken me. My goal of at least 12 posts per month has been attained and rather than try to increase this target I would expect it to continue at around 12 - 15.

Commissions have been quiet this year but work has also been busier and in truth, I think the work/pleasure or work/hobby balance has been about right. In 2012 I would expect this and Dampfwerks to 'potter-along' at about the same level.

The big change in 2012 has been the increase in magazine or On-line magazine articles that I have penned. In 2012 I expect this to become an even more important part of my modelling life. As I have written on many occasions - I am a modeller first, a figure painter second and a wargamer third.

The stock-pile of Barking Irons Online (Web based magazine) articles has taken quite a bit of my spare time but has been hugely rewarding. In addition my short story writing has also developed, but as even I admit - could be better.

One development of 2011 was my un-official goal of trying to reduce the huge 'Lead Mountain' I have and this one small step has been very satisfying, allowing me to model and paint a wide variety of 'toy soldiers'. Without setting myself a firm goal or target - I would hope that this could continue in 2012. In addition I would recommend a similar goal to other figure collectors. It is very rewarding.

On a personal note my part-time job has developed and now accounts for about 25/30 hours a week - a figure that I can only imagine increasing in 2012. The time I spend modelling or painting model soldiers varies with the temperature - as I do most of my modelling in a shed-at-the-bottom-of-the-garden and when the water freezes I tend to come indoors and watch TV!

Finally I have recently started studying colour theory, the practice of complimentary and harmonising colours and how to select colour schemes that compliment rather than clash. I would hope that this interest and skill improves both my colour choices and painting skills.

As stated at the beginning, this was never intended as either a look back or a list of resolutions for 2012, just a clearing of the mind in the hope that this New Year I become a better Blogger, Modeller and Figure Painter.

IPMS Scale Model World - a photo report, part seven

Part seven is a 'hotch-potch' of various water based models ranging from the Fantastical Russian Caspian Sea Monsters to the Roman Trireme of Antiquity.

I thought that these two images may need some additional notes. Imagine a German attempt to conquer parts of Central Africa at the height of WW2 and the need for a shallow-draft enforcer. This cross between a German E-Boot and the Airfix Great Western paddle steamer may have been the answer. The attention to detail and authenticity of this imagineered gun boat was quite staggering and I enjoyed discussing the idea behind the model with its constructor.

Miniature Figure Painting Guides

This Christmas I was lucky enough to receive two miniature painting guides, the first How to Paint Fantasy Miniatures by Andreas Press was a gift from my Mother-in-Law and bought via e-bay while the second Eavy Metal Masterclass by Games Workshop was a gift from my Wife and bought from the local GW store in Worcester.

I thought it would be fun to compare and contrast the two in this quick review. Firstly How to Paint Fantasy Miniatures by Andreas Press.

The 64 page guide was new to me, even though it was first published in 2006! My immediate reaction was that it was a little 'lightweight' but beautifully produced, as you would expect from Andreas Press. On closer examination I found the contents and tutorials to be a bit disappointing. I could go into great detail about why I felt this way, but rather than being too negative on what was a Christmas present, I would prefer to concentrate on more positive points.

The tutorials are well illustrated with numbered points relating to coloured images. The content is broken into Introduction, Basic Techniques, Advanced Techniques and Master Pieces with each of these chapters being stylishly illustrated. The problem seems to be that the translated text has not been proof read and there are many terms and comments that are both confusing and difficult to follow. In addition the text is a little to sparse and could easily have been expanded - after all, this is a painting guide and I prefer too much information and description rather than too little. I also found the predominantly black pages and white text a little difficult to follow. This point was further exasperated when looking through the Gallery pages - again black background and very small images.

Overall a painting guide that I wanted to like was let down by simple mistakes and 'corner cutting'. Could do better and I am finding it difficult to award the guide any better than 5 out of 10. The guide is available in various languages and from Andreas Miniatures or retailers with prices ranging from £11 - £16.

The second Christmas Painting Guide was the new Eavy Metal Masterclass from Games Workshop. Most modellers and figure painters will be very familiar with both Eavy Metal and the 'glossy style' of this 98 page guide as it follows the tried and proved Eavy Metal painting articles featured in every White Dwarf.

I found the book a lot easier to follow. This maybe because of the familiarity of the in-house White Dwarf/Games Workshop style. I also found the greater amount of text made the techniques easier to follow and also bring the painting 'to life'.

The contents were set out in 13 in-depth painting articles each featuring a different core figure and covering Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings. The techniques discussed were very similar to the Andreas Press guide but in every example the tutorial and comments in the GW guide was better illustrated and better explained. In addition there were many more colour images to illustrate these techniques.

As far as I am aware the tutorials are all new - in other words not just a re-hash of painting guides from White Dwarf (although - not being a religious follower of White Dwarf, I maybe mistaken). However once again I found the tutorials a little light weight. Therefore I would award the guide no better than 8 out of 10.

For some years I have been thinking of getting rid of my White Dwarf magazines. One of the main reasons that I have not, is that I enjoy these figure painting articles. I have even thought about cutting up my White Dwarf magazines and producing my own Painting Guide by re-binding the Eavy Metal tutorials. This book goes some way to doing exactly this and I have no hesitation in recommending this Guide to regular followers of White Dwarf as well as modellers and figure painters wishing to improve their painting skills.

The Masterclass Guide is available via Games Workshop for £18.00.

In the case of both painting guides I was ultimately disappoint with the content and as both were much appreciated gifts I feel a little uneasy in criticising either - I am never-the-less very concious that others will be wanting honest and detailed reviews. I feel that the Kevin Dallimore's Painting Guide and Masterclass books are a much better read and directory of painting styles and techniques than either of these. Even so both are set to become regular reads and much-thumbed study books in my attempt to improve my painting skills.

The Great Rabbit Hunt - on Orcs in the Webbe

Orcs in the Webbe have uploaded day 21 of this years Advent Calendar - The Great Rabbit Hunt which was written by me and introduces Big Fat Leighty or (BFL) a huge Orc cook who leads a group of retrogrades on a special mission for Wogan. The original story was initially written as a White Liar short story, but developed into this slightly longer tale when it was included in the Advent Calendar.

This miniature is a converted Obidiah from the Flintloque Deserter box set and was modelled as the snaggle-tooth chef from Gormengast.

Craig Andrews (Editor - Orcs in the Webbe) promised that this years Advent Calendar would be a beauty and with just three days to go he has really delivered. For anyone not familiar with the Advent Calendar, OITW produce a Christmas gift of a piece of fiction, an interview or a gaming article for each of the advent days from 1 - 24 so keep coming back to see what is on offer.

Shoggoth's Old Peculiar by Neil Gaiman

I recently read a story by Neil Gaiman called Shoggoth's Old Peculiar. The short story (just 12 pages long) is written in the style of Terry Pratchett with a H P Lovecraft theme and is well worth checking out. It had me laughing out loud at some of the 'cthulhu in-jokes'.

The story can be found in the Gaiman compilation Smoke and Mirrors published by Headline Book Publishing.

Just a short post - but highly recommended.

IPMS Scale Model World - a photo report, part five

In part five I have added images of what I think are some of the most entertaining models - the 'What-if's' or Fantastical Aircraft that were on display. They range from actual aircraft with alternative colour schemes or markings to Luft 46 'paper planes' and even a couple of film stars or film props. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I do. My favourite part of visiting the IPMS show is seeing such models.

Not sure about this one - it could be a What-if, or an actual aircraft.

TSR2's One of my all-time favourite aircraft and I make no apologies for it being included in various colour schemes.

These two aircraft were on the British Secret Project Display which was crammed packed with gorgeous models.

I would normally think twice before including an aircraft with such a blatant Nazi insignia, however this model was on the Acrobatic Display Team stand and I feel the modeller had done a great job of visualising what the Horten Flying Wing would have looked like if Germany had a Post-War Flying Display Team.

This was not a What-if but displayed as an actual aircraft!

I have no idea of the historical accuracy of this flying test bed, but it does look fantastic.

This Gloster Meteor has Turbo-prop engines and Israeli markings. The actual aircraft did exist as a test bed, although not in these spectacular markings or as an operational fighter/bomber.

Over the years FMF has become a bit of a Flintloque/Slaughterloo anti-hero, with adventures being featured on OITW and Barking Irons Online In this story and scenario Freddy finds himself in shackles on the orders of Sim-San and awaiting transportation back to Olde Nosey with the very real prospect of Court Marshal. Can Freddy 'pull one out of the bag' and secure safe passage for a pack of camp followers as well as his own release?

I have have great fun writing these short stories and one day hope to see a compilation in print. Maybe a Christmas treat for 1012? For now, I hope you enjoy this latest adventure.

Figure Painting Tips and Advice.

In an attempt to pass-on some small 'nuggets' of advice relating to painting miniatures I have listed below some tips on painting miniatures. Before I start, I need to confirm that I am NOT A GOLDEN DEMON winner or a professional figure painter. Just someone who enjoys 'prodding paint on small metal figures.'

In no particular order;

Light source
A good light source is a must. I use Daylight Bulbs or Blue Natural Bulbs in my overhead anglepoise lamp as well as having my workbench mounted below a North facing window. I actually have two Daylight Bulbs, one to the right and another to the left but for most figure painting jobs one is enough. Finally as a right hander I find that it is best to have the main light shinning from above and slightly to the left.

Seating position and workbench
I use a comfortable wooden chair with arms, as I like to rest my elbows on the arms to steady my painting and holding hands. I have also raised my painting workbench so I am not 'hunched over.'

Water (and additives)
There have been many comments about using clean water to paint acrylics. I am sorry to say that I do not always 'practice what I preach' and there are many occasions when my water jug is filthy. Never-the-less the sound advice is to have at least two water jars on your painting bench, one for metallics and one for 'normal' paints.

When filling the jars I try to use boiled water rather than tap water - again don't get too worked up over it as I am sure that tap water in the UK is perfectly OK for figure painting. I also like to use a tiny drop of flow improver, I really do mean a tiny drop. You can find flow improver in your local arts store - a small bottle will last ages. If you cannot find any or maybe think that you can do without flow improver, you can always use a drop of plain washing-up liquid in your water jar. A dilution of one part washing-up liquid to thousands of parts of plain water is enough.

Shake your Paint Pots
OK, once again I have to admit to not always following this piece of advice. That does not mean that it is bad advice - just that I am lazy!

I label all of my paint pots or bottles with a date purchased mark - just Month/Year will do as it helps to organise your paint collection and obviously you use the earlier date first.

Thin your paints
It is an obvious hint but well worth repeating. I am not going to give any hard and fast formula, just experiment and remember that three thinned coats will give a better finish that one from the pot - except in the case of WHITE!

Brushes
Use a good brush. I am not asking you to go out and spend a fortune of a No.7 Windsor & Newton Sable. I just recommend having a good brush with a good point.

The last time a purchased a standard Games Workshop/Citadel brush I must have driven the salesman mad. I tried five or six brushed, taking the plastic tube protector off each and examining the bristles and point of each before making my choice.

When was the last time you examined a brush before buying it?

Palette
I use a spiral-bound notebook as a palette, they are cheap to buy and when you have finished your current project - just rip the page out and you have a fresh paper palette.

There are many specialised plastic or porcelain palettes available - I know because I have them. But I still prefer the plain notebook palette to all those fancy ones and they are cheaper.

Brands of Acrylic Paints - which ones are best?
I have no idea! I am a real paint collector and have paints from dozens of different companies, pots, eye-droppers, tubes and so-called Craft Paints. For me it is using the right colour/consistency for you. The best advice I can give on choosing paints is to experiment and even then, some companies may well produce Great Metallics (for example GW) but have really washy Yellows and weak Reds.

I would never think of starting any painting project without having Snakebite Leather from GW on my bench.

Painting eyes
I have better things to do with my time! When it is done properly it is great, but in the main only paint eyes if you have too.

Washes - good or bad thing?
Not sure how to proceed with this one - when washes came out I was an early-adopter and have many pots and bottles on my desk. However in recent months I have begun to question their worth and how they can make a miniature look 'dirty' or 'grubby'.

One piece of advice I was given some time ago was to water-down your washes with distilled water (the sort you can buy in any discount store or supermarket for topping-up batteries). Distilled water, flow-improver's and commercial washes make great washes.

Black or White undercoat?
Mainly I use a Black undercoat. But have been known to use White, Grey and even Dark Brown. It is purely a matter of personal choice and what effect you are looking to achieve on the miniature. Do not feel that you have to stick with one style of undercoat. Mixing undercoats on figures in the same regiment or even on the same figure is perfectly acceptable.

Paint in small batches
I find that I work best with batches of 4 to 12 figures at a time. Any more and the task becomes too daunting.

Dallimore Painting Technique
I have all of Kevin Dallimore's Painting Guides and Books. I do not attempt to copy his style, preferring a hybrid Dallimore and Blending technique. When the Dallimore technique is done well it produces some quite stunning figures, but although I paint-up over a Black undercoat and in layers. I find that I blend a little more than Kevin.

Colour Theory
I am lucky in that I studied art and colour theory at school. Therefore in the main it comes naturally. If you want to know more then the Internet or local library are your best sources. You could even look at joining a local art course. Many years ago my Wife enrolled me on one - Painting Watercolours and I had a ball as well as learning loads.

Finally, the best piece of advice I can give is develop your own style and paint for enjoyment.

Andrew Beasley has commented that he uses Bottled Water (sorry no details as to what brand) for thinning acrylic paints and Used CD's as mixing palettes. Both great tips.

Since I first wrote about the heroic Orc Sergeant back in 2009, Freddy has gone on to become a regular feature on the Orcs in the Webbe Advent Calendar as well as Barking Irons Online. Craig has detailed in the latest post all of his adventures to date.

The latest adventure Foul Mouth Freddy Divides up the ****ing Loot, details some experimental Solo rules that I have been playing with, as usual comments and critique are welcome.

For anyone not familiar with FMF, he is loosely based on a family friend, Uncle Fred with some of the adventures inspired by memories and stories told to me by Fred and my Father. The 2011 Advent Calendar goes from strength-to-strength and it is great to see Freddy back in his spiritual home - after all an Orcs in the Webbe Advent Calendar just wouldn't be the same without a FMF story!

Droitwich Golf and Country Club

Christmas Away-Day, Birmingham

Last week Dave Bodley (Grand Manner) and I had made plans to visit Richard and Mark at The Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company, Birmingham or HLBS. Due to circumstances beyond our control (Richard had Man-Flu) the visit was cancelled at the last minute. However not to be put off we rescheduled the trip for Friday 2nd December. I picked up jam doughnuts and Dave had a selection of soft cream buns for our long and arduous day out.

After finding a parking spot in The Jewellery Quarter we marched across to Parabellum where strong hot tea was waiting. Anyone who has yet to experience the pleasure of a visit to this modelling emporium will realise just how popular it is when I tell you that for the next two hours Mark was kept busy making cups of tea for literally dozens of visitors and customers and we spent a great time dissecting the current situation of the Modelling and Wargaming industries.

Just before we were about to leave Jim (a regular visitor and character) arrived to say that he had been delayed by the Christmas Market and a stabbing at the local pub just under the Birmingham Central Library. "Weather something or other". "Weatherspoons,?" Was the chorus of replies. No said Jim with a knife! (A joke that will only have any meaning to someone familiar with local Pub Chains in the UK and should also illustrate the level of humour that two hours in a cramped model shop can deteriorate too).

On a serious note Richard showed me some fantastic 28mm ACW Coastal Battery guns that he is working on, true masterpieces of the model makers art, tiny details on superb resin guns and carriages. Later I was shown the new 28mm Nautilus. A breathtaking water-line model of the famous Submersible. And seeing it in the 'Flesh' took my breath away, a fantastic model and a snatch at just £75.00. Discussions moved on to 'what is currently on the workbench' and I was shown two spectacular masters that Richard is working on and should be available very soon. The first is one of the biggest and most beautiful modern 'water line' boats I have ever see, sorry sworn to secrecy at this moment, but as soon as I have the green-light I will post more details and prices.

The second model is a tank and I predict it will be the best selling model in the range, once again sworn to secrecy, but when this model is released the whole hobby will be clambering for one. Honestly, it is that good and of a prototype that everyone will recognise. I mean everyone, Hint, Hint.

(Sorry its all secret, but I have been asked not to betray a confidence, I can still hint at it! Can't I Rich?)

After a couple more cakes - a real Sugar-Rush, Dave and I visited Wayland Forge, then walked down to Ian Allen Books for a browse at the shelves. Prior to making our way back to Droitwich and Bromsgrove we had an hour in the German Market. A day out, that I had told my Wife would finish by 4,00pm, actually lasted until 6.30pm and when Sue asked what I had been doing? I replied by saying. "Standing around in a cramped Model Shop, drinking tea and moaning about the state of the economy and how wargamers can be such a strange breed!" "So you didn't enjoy it?" Asked Sue. "Oh no, I loved it - and I can't wait to do it again." I said.

Flash Gordon Molemen - part five

After years of planning and a couple of false starts I have finally finished a Moleman for my 40mm Flash Gordon collection.

The miniature has been Gloss Varnished with Ronseal Varnish and once dry Matt Varnished with three coats of Galleria Acrylic Varnish. Finally I have added some static grass to the 40mm round base.

Full details of the background and conversion can be found in earlier posts, but for now I hope you enjoy these images of the completed miniature.

Photo Two - Shows the converted Moleman being directed by a Ming Officer from the Graven Images/Cliff Hanger range of 40mm figures.

Although the construction and painting has been fully covered in earlier posts, I thought it would be interesting to include these WIP shots. Starting with the early metal/plastic conversion and detailing the steps through to fully painted, varnished and flocked.

I suppose that I should start work on the remaining two Reaper miniatures and get around to building a group of three Molemen- but for now I am just pleased to see one finished.

Flash Gordon Molemen - part four

Earlier posts show how the Moleman conversion was accomplished while these images detail the step-by-step painting progress.

Photo One - After cleaning up some of the more noticeable seams and issues, I spray painted the whole miniature with 'rattle can' Matt Black which was bought from a discount store for just £1.00. Any areas that I missed with the spray can were touched up with Chaos Black.

Photo Two - I tried to copy the colour scheme of the Wyrd Miniatures Molemen (featured earlier) and built up the flesh areas from Snakebite Leather, highlighting with Pale Flesh from Vallejo and Skull White from GW.

Photo Three - I think I have highlighted a little too much, a little too pale for my liking. I have therefore 'washed' the whole miniature with washes from GW. I have mixed up the Mud wash with the Sepia wash and even added some of the Purple wash to give this 'richer' skin colour. In addition I have washed the black areas with Black and Mud washes to try to get away from such a stark black base.

Photo Four - More highlighting and detail painting.

Photo Five - The base has been painted in my usual 40mm Flash Gordon style, a very dark earth colour which uses Scorched Brown from Vallejo with the stone areas built up with Chaos Black and Skull White and all given a couple of washes. The base has been cleaned up with pure Chaos Black and the miniature is now ready for varnishing.

Flash Gordon Molemen - part three

I have re-sculpted the head, first cutting away the ears and then smoothing out the cranium to make it less pointed. The mouth has been 'Dremelled' - grinding away the existing sharpened teeth and sculpting two pairs of 'mole' incisors.

I have added 'Green Stuff' nodules to the models back and larger nipples as seen on the Wyrd Miniatures Molemen. The most drastic surgery came when I cut away the figures genitals and re-sculpted the area with 'Green Stuff'.

In addition, I have added some sand and sieved stones to the base, which were applied over dilute uPVA glue.

In this final image I have used Acrylic Modelling Paste to smooth out defects in the body and refined both the teeth and the head with more 'Green Stuff'.

With the conversion/sculpting complete - the next part will be painting.

A Small Witchland Tomb - a 28mm Masterclass

Barking Irons Online is featuring my latest Masterclass - a Small Witchland Tomb where I build both a smaller, simpler tomb and some grave markers. The initial models and article were both constructed and written at the same time as the earlier Witchlands Tomb in an attempt by me to increase the number of Witchlands/Undead terrain pieces in my Flintloque/Deadloque collection.

I still have some white-metal gravestones and grave markers which I should base and paint up. Maybe this will be my next project.

Harbinger Magazine

Earlier this month I was sorting through some boxes in the attic and came across a box file of Harbinger Magazines. A full set of all 25 paper published magazines.

When Harbinger first came out in August 2003 it really was a 'breath of fresh air' in a market that was truly dominated by Games Workshop. I eagerly picked up my copy from W H Smiths and within two or three issues decided to subscribe. In the very early days there were special limited edition miniatures offered to early subscribers - miniatures that I still have to this day.

At just £3.50 per issue I read each from front-to-back and absorbed the articles and review with some relish.

Later I allowed my subscription to lapse, but as you can see I still supported the publication, right up until issue 25. The last paper published magazine (2005). I am aware that there was at least one On-Line edition which was available via www.harbingermagazine.com although recent attempts to access this site have been unsuccessful.

The main reason for this post was to have a look-back at this publication and try to assess what it was that called to me when this magazine was originally launched.

I spent a week or two reading the articles and reviews and in truth was a little disappoint. It could be that this magazine 'was of an age' and has not lasted as well as others, but I found the articles to be less enjoyable than I had expected or remembered. I am not suggesting that I will sell-on my collection. I think I am too sentimentally attached to the memory of the earlier editions and looking back through 'rose-tinted' glasses am a little blinkered. I find that earlier White Dwarf's still hold some fascination while Harbinger is just a reference read and a look back at what-was.

I would be interested to read what others think of this now long gone magazine and if they like me find the memory of the writing greater than the fact?

For anyone not familiar with the magazine I would suggest that you pick one or two up (there are a number available via e-bay) and have a read. They are fun, informative and give a very good overview of what game designers and figure manufacturers were working on back then.

Finally I long for a truly independent fantasy miniature/gaming magazine, but I also think this role has now been taken over by the Internet, suppliers web pages and forums. How I long for holding a paper edition of these electronic magazines - but as time moves on I firmly believe that the electronic Web based magazine, Blog and Forum is the real way forward. I may not like it, but I doubt if there really is room or a market for such a paper based publication today.

Flash Gordon Molemen - part two

In part one, I gave some background to this long stalled conversion/modelling project however with my re-kindled interest in 40mm Flash Gordon I thought it was time that I started work on my Molemen.

Photo One - A metal miniature from the Reaper Dark Heaven/Legends range. GarravanK the Ghoul King (number 03388) bought from e-bay. The miniature stands 36mm tall (head to toe) and is quite a hefty lump of lead.

Photo Two - After a long e-bay search I came across this HeroClix miniature URSA MAJOR (102) - A huge brown Bear with enormous claws that I thought would be ideal for this conversion. This figure stands over 50mm tall.

Photo Three - The first part of the conversion. I have cut both hands off the Reaper Miniature and attached the claws from the Ursa Major bear figure. Both claws have been pinned and superglued in place.

I have not attempted any major animation, preferring to keep the pose the same. The base is a 40mm 'premium round' base with the groundwork built up from broken cork and Milliput. I have also added a layer of 1mm plastic card under the figures metal base to raise the height of the model.

At this moment there is no fine or detailed sculpting, just some Milliput around the joins between the metal arms and the plastic claws. I intend refining the sculpting once these initial conversions have fully set.

In part three, I will detail some of the refined sculpting - this figure still looks like a ghoul with huge hands while I am trying for something more akin to the Wyrd Miniatures Molemen see in part one.

If I ever get around to modelling the other two Molemen I will have to animate the base GarravanK miniature a little more.

Grand Manner Buildings at Crisis 2011 Antwerp

The display is put on by THS (Team fur Historische Simulationen) - Leipzig 1813.

While image three shows both the European Windmill, LINK and some of the Town Collection Link both of which are cast from my initial models.

I should add that the images have been used without permission to show some of the models I have designed and built for GM. It always gives me a thrill to see these models both painted and used in games.

Flash Gordon - Molemen

My latest On-Line Build is a Moleman for my 40mm Flash Gordon project. For over three years I have been adding to my collection of 40mm Flash Gordon characters and creatures and this is one that I have been wanting to model for most of that time.

The 40mm Jim Bowen/Cliffhanger miniatures that started this fascination have a group of four Molemen (see earlier posts) but for some reason they have never appealed to me and I have been searching out suitable proxy figures to model/sculpt and paint.

This image shows some Molemen sitting astride a jet-cycle and firing their acetylene guns. In fact I believe these creatures are a group of adversaries for Superman and not Flash Gordon.

Previous posts have detailed my plans - so far fruitless plans for a group of three Molemen. I originally looked at the Cliffhanger Molemen, but they were too simple, too cartoon like. I then looked at these Wyrd Miniatures Molemen, but after purchasing them realised that they were way to small to sit alongside my 40mm collection and so I sold them on and it was 'back to the drawing board'.

I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett

I'm back in love with Pratchett. Last year I started reading Unseen Academicals but for the first time with a Pratchett book I did not enjoy it or finish it. I Shall Wear Midnight (the 38th Discworld Novel) has rekindled my enjoyment of Terry Pratchett and he is back to the top of his game.

I found this book in a charity book early last month and almost from page one it was non-stop roller-coaster of fun and humour. Highly recommended.

Headless Zombies - a Flintloque Halloween Campaign

Barking Irons Online is featuring a three part Flintloque Halloween Campaign written by me and called Getting Ahead The initial idea and story was intended to be a short story and featuring on BIO as one of The White Liar stories. However as the idea developed it became obvious that this simple short story could be expanded into both a longer tale and three linked gaming scenarios.

Craig Andrews had spent some considerable time honing my initial scribbling and produced a quite horrific background story and gaming scenarios the first part of which is featured on Barking Irons Online (see link above). Craig will be publishing the following two instalments over the next couple of days.

The story thread was first penned back in March of this year but as it developed both Craig and I decided that the ideal time for publication was Halloween - The First Barking Irons Halloween Special. I hope you enjoy part one.

To illustrate the story I produced these Headless Zombies - Flintloque/Deadloque miniatures that have been converted based and painted. More to follow.

Given the length of time from start-to-finish on this project it is great to finally see it published. I hope that you enjoy reading part one.

On-Line build for Halloween - part three

With the bead pumpkins added I basecoated the whole piece with a mixture of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown.

Photo One - The model all ready for painting.

Photo Two - I started with a couple of simple drybrushes. Snakebite Leather for the trunk and Grey (Chaos Black and Skull White) for the rock.

Photo Three - The drybrushing was refined and the groundwork filled in. The pumpkins were painted over a Brown base with Orange and later Orange/Yellow highlights.

Photo Four - The stalks were painted over a very dark Green and highlighted with lighter Green (Forest Green from Foundry) and then Green/Yellow. Prior to fully finishing I gave the pumpkins a 'wash' of Baal Red from GW.

Photos Five, Six and Seven - The Halloween inspired terrain piece finished and flocked with railway scatter (as are all of my terrain pieces - to 'blend-in with my scatter covered gaming board).

I find these modelling interludes fun as I can usually finish them between jobs. This particular piece will be added to my growing collection of Flintloque gaming terrain and I feel fits in well with the 'fun' or 'comic' feel of Flintloque.

I hope that this short On-Line Build has been informative and maybe inspire others to keep their vegetable waste and build some simple terrain piece!

Winchcombe

Earlier today my Wife and I drove down to Cheltenham but instead of driving straight down the M5 from Droitwich we detoured via the picturesque village of Winchcombe which was once the centre of the ancient kingdom Mercia. The first six images are of The George Inn which is reputed to be the oldest original building in Winchcombe and was used by the Abbott of Winchcombe Abbey to house visiting pilgrims.

Today the George Inn has been converted into individual cottages. Access to these dwellings is through the archway in image one and down a steep alleyway. This LINK gives details of how the original building has been converted.

Further into Winchcombe we saw some interesting timber-framed houses, some of which are detailed below.

On our return to the car which was parked next to Lloyds Bank (reputed to be the site of the original settlement) I passed a small toy store and was struck by the beautiful internal stone work - Cotswold honey-coloured stone. Upon closer examination I saw that the main stone beam across the fire and holding up the chimney breast had been repaired with metal strapping. I spoke to the owner of the store who said that it had happened soon after the fire had been completed and the wrought iron repair has lasted hundreds of years!

We drove from Winchcombe over Bishops Cleave (which has some fantastic views of Tewkesbury) and down into Cheltenham where we spent most of the day shopping before having a very good 'all-you-can-eat' Chinese Buffet Lunch.

On-Line build for Halloween - part two

With the construction completed, I undercoated the piece with a mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown. At this point I was looking to simply drybrush the heavy texture and get on with painting.

However two things. Firstly I saw a post over on The Lead Adventure Forum showing a group of Pumpkin Headed troops then later when on a visit to Worcester, I picked up some beads to model some miniature pumpkins.

Here you see the the latest modelling, three 28mm scale pumpkins with metal-wire stalks and Milliput leaves. I have built up the groundwork and roots with left-over Milliput.

Here you can see the three pumpkins nestled down at the base of the root/stalk.

And now - back to painting. I think adding miniature pumpkins adds to the Halloween Theme as well as reminding readers that the initial idea was inspired by a 'real' pumpkin!

An On-Line build for Halloween

With Halloween fast approaching I thought this On-Line build would be fun. Last year I kept this pumpkin stalk and dried it out on the window sill. Since then it has laid gathering dust and waiting for me to decide what to do with it.

I trimmed off the base of the stalk with a large 'snap-off' bladed knife and mounted it onto a dried wood/bark chip with my hot glue gun. Both pieces were then glued to a rough oval of 3mm plastic card.

The groundwork has been built-up with Terracotta coloured DAS Modelling Clay to model this old and gnarled tree trunk. This is not an original idea - but one copied from some article on the Web, sorry that I cannot remember where it came from or who posted it. If anyone remembers seeing it, please post details in the Comments section.

Finally for this post, I have added some ground texture by sprinkling sand and small sieved stones over uPVA glue. You should also be able to see where I have modelled roots and additional features to the trunk.

I am pleased with the effect so far and will be starting the painting soon. It is my hope (but not a promise) that I will be able to finish this piece of terrain before the 31st.

The piece is 110mm long x 65mm wide x 55mm tall.

Almost a year on and I am finally getting around to modelling something from this Halloween Pumpkin stalk.

Away-Day 2011 - a Tour of Herefordshire

For the last two years Dave Bodley (of Grand Manner) and I have had some great trips or Away-Days researching various historic building and museums. Previous days out have included a visit to Hessen Park in Germany and a day out at Weald and Downland Museum in Sussex. This year our plan was a grand tour of the Welsh Marches stretching from Chepstow up to Chester. As the plans grew and grew and the Summer was coming to an end we decided that we had 'bitten of more than we could chew' and as realism struck home we revised our Away-Days to have a day out driving around Worcester and Hereford and trying to see the main historical buildings that are in our back garden.

I planned the day and as late as the night before I was worried that we had not included enough to fill even one day. I should never have worried. As it was we covered about 60% of the planned route!

Starting at Droitwich Spa, Worcester the first stop was Lower Smite to see this beautifully restored farm building. It sits on the side of a small hill which allows access to a below-ground store. I believe that the reconstruction work was carried out by Avoncroft Museum, Bromsgrove, but the building once finished has been allowed to stand on its original plot.

Next it was on to Warndon to see this 17th Century church. St Nicholas' Church, Warndon has a restored wooden bell tower attached to an older stone built church. Our first bit of good fortune was that the 'key holder' was doing his rounds and when we told him what we were planning on our away-day we were allowed access to both the church and the tower. The tower interior showed signs of how the original had been built and was a great benefit to us as model makers.

Back into the car and through Worcester (We are planning another Away-Day for Worcester - seeing the traditional black and white buildings and a visit to The Commandery, so no stopping this time). Onto St Johns where we spent time examining both the reproduced Wooden-Framed house next to the Co Op superstore and then Alfred Taylors House where Dave was allowed to see and photograph the beautiful painted wall murals.

Heading South we drove to and then through Upton-on-Severn and out towards Ledbury. On the hill climb up and over The Hereford Beacon we stopped and visited The Little Malvern Priory. We had not planned this visit but it was one of the highlights of the day and very well worth a visit. A small priory situated on the steep slopes of The Malverns with stunning views and an equally stunning interior. A major plus is that situated to the West is a large Manor House with a Tudor black and white tower.

We drove in to Ledbury at about noon and with plans to have a pub lunch were looking forward to a quick walk around and a glass of local cider. The weather was glorious and after parking at the back of The Feathers we emerged into bright sunshine and a crowded market square where a Continental Market was taking place. Two hours later (and still no cider) we were still exploring the fantastic array of buildings and regional architecture. I think the highlight for me was the visit to The Butchers Row Museum where once again we spent time speaking to the curator about our plans and different historical buildings in the area.

The licensee of The Talbot, seeing us taking photos, asked us what we were doing. When we told him, he asked if we would like to see the oak-panelled dinning room and showed us where 'buck-shotte' holes still marked the framing.

After a quick stop in Hereford City Centre where we walked around the Old House (a very prominent and ornately decorated building in the centre square) we had a quick snack (sandwiches which we had brought with us) a visit to The Hereford Model Centre and then made our way up to Leominster.

Our first major detour from the plan was a visit to Canon Pyon where I took this photo of a restored Dovecote. the overwhelming memory of the day will be the strong and sweet scent of apples - it seemed that everywhere we went the scent of freshly picked apples and fermenting cider tantalised both out taste-buds and our nose.

Later we came across a second dovecote and as we were photographing it - along came the farmer (with over a hundred sheep in tow) to question us. A couple of minutes later and we were pointed in the direction of further historical buildings.

Further North we visited Weobley - a town just crammed packed with traditional wooden-framed houses. If you have never been, make plans now - it is a fantastic day out. This house was undergoing some extreme repairs and re-structuring. the builder was saying that it would be completely rebuilt and used for holiday rented accommodation.

As well as the new carpentry, the archway (behind the white van) was being re-cobbled.

Weobley has dozens of wooden-framed buildings and if you have ever seen Grand Designs you will know of the town as one of the programmes follows a young couple and their modern house build while trying to blend-in with the local style.

From Weobley it was up to Pembridge and as the sun began to set we saw more timber-framed houses while following the black and white trail.

Our plan to move on to Leominster and then down to Bewdley never materialised as the day was now over. Similarly visits to Stokesay Castle (thanks Chris) and Brockhampton will have to wait for another Away-Day!

It is clear to Dave and I that our ill-conceived plans to do the whole the Welsh Marches in a day were totally unrealistic, equally even this short journey of less than 100miles succeeded in pointing out the folly of trying to cover so much in one day. I came back with hundreds of images which OK may never be modelled. But the inspiration is quite marvellous and proves that in Worcester and Hereford you are never far from some beautiful history. We are very lucky.

Maybe next time we will have time for a pub meal and that pint of cider.

IPMS Scale ModelWorld 2011

In one months time I will be visiting the IPMS Scale ModelWorld 2011 show at The International Centre, Telford. This is the main IPMS (International Plastic Modellers Society) meeting of the year with thousand of visitors from all over the world and hundreds of displays. In my opinion one of the best (if not the best) model shows in the world. Quite a claim, but in this case well deserved. Full details can be found HERE

Last year I spent a full day studying the models and retailers on display and wrote nine separate Blog entries detailing some of the fantastic models I saw, for details go to Wargame Shows Labels or this LINK

My own plans are to visit the show on Sunday 13th November. I find the Sunday is a little quieter and as the main judging has taken place, you can see the competition entries/winners without interfering with the judges.

I have also convinced Dave (from Grand Manner) that he should come with me. I have in previous years told him of the event, but this year he has agreed to come along.

For anyone interested in model making, model collecting, aviation, military history or just looking for a great day out, I would recommend this 100%. Just remember to bring lots of money as the choices on display are 'mouth-watering' and very hard to resist.

It is my intention to take many more photos and post them on this Blog, but seriously - if you can, please come along, I assure you that you will not be disappoint. This may sound like an advert - but I have no official connection with the IPMS group (although maybe I should join). I just feel that modellers everywhere deserve to see this exhibition at least once.

Ming Officer for Flash Gordon

This particular character model is a conversion of an officer figure from the 40mm Graven Images/Cliffhanger range (sometimes available from Monolith Designs). The model uses the body of the 40mm Cliffhanger miniature (CH015 Mongo Officers) with the head and Greek helmet from a Spartan Miniatures Hoplite (HML003 Greek Hero B). I have 'pinned' the head for added strength and filled the gaps with Green Stuff. Additional uniform detailing is built up with Green Stuff.

Photo One - Shows the finished miniature mounted on to a 40mm round base, the groundwork being built-up with broken cork (old wine bottle cork) and Milliput.

Photo Two - The same miniature but with the image taken from a different angle.

Photo Three - Neither figure is 'stock' both having some conversion/detailing work carried out but I do feel that this photo shows how a miniature can be easily converted. I choose the dark red colour scheme for two reasons, firstly to make it as different as possible to the white clad figure and secondly as I did not want another blue clad officer. I am less confident at painting blue than I am at painting red?

I converted and based the figure just over a week ago, having the Spartan head in my spares box. The painting was finished in one evening with the gloss varnish going on last night and the matt varnish and flock being finished this morning.

Overall I am happy with this finished figure (particularly the jewel on the belt buckle) however I realise that my 'idealized' or 'impressionistic' painting style may not be to everyone's liking. Given that my two previous Flash Gordon miniatures - Vultan and Frigia Officer have not come out as expected, I am pleased that this one has.

A bit of a mixed bag with this post as I thought it was about time I commented on current or on-going projects.

Blogging;
During the Summer I have continued to read books, paint models and build terrain. Most (but not all) have been recorded here.

Personally speaking I do not want to change the style or 'feel' of this Blog as I find producing it very therapeutic.

Dampfwerks;
Having spent a huge amount of time modelling the Sudan Paddle Steamers and Sudan Buildings for Dave at Grand Manner. My order book has been slow. I am not worried as after building over 50 separate pieces, all modular and inter-changeable - I think I deserve a rest.

Dave and I have another 'Away-Day' booked for this weekend, so I am hopeful that more modelling commissions will come soon.

Flash Gordon;
The increase in posts relating to my 40mm Flash Gordon project has come as a bit of a surprise to me and was not planned. I recall reading a post on some Blog of a modeller who had set himself the goal of painting 365 figures in 2011. As my own 'Lead Mountain' is huge, I thought that a slightly smaller goal of one miniature a week would force me to get painting. So far this has been quite enjoyable and I can see it continuing.

Flintloque;
I have been busy building and writing Masterclass Articles for Barking Irons Online. When Craig asked me to supply a monthly terrain building article I felt that I needed to stock-pile a few so as to give me some breathing space. Regular readers will know that full details are posted here when the article is published (usually the first week of each month). I can tell you that there are enough finished articles to run until the New Year plus a couple of 'specials' that should be released very soon.

In addition, I continue to write stories for BIO with White Liar short stories and even a Flintloque themed Novella due out soon.

Over the last six months I have set myself the goal of reducing my 'Lead Mountain' and so further figure modelling and painting posts will continue this year and into 2012.

Space 1889/Aeronef;
Since the announcement of new Space 1889 miniatures and rule books by Frank Chadwick, my interest has waned. I have no immediate plans for more Aeronef's, but this might change.

Typhon;
Moved to the 'back boiler' over the last couple of months, but still a project that I am looking forward to adding too. Currently there are plans for a Typhon gaming board with themed terrain and more miniatures - but 'don't tell my Wife.'

Others;
I have purchased a second-hand Corgi Blake's 7 Liberator model from e-bay with the intention of re-modelling it and mounting it as a gaming piece. This could lead to yet another new project.

2011 has been busy and I am sure will continue to be busy, but should anyone want me to produce masters for them, please contact me via this Blog.

The Shadow over Innsmouth

BBC Radio 4 Extra have recently run the audio play The Shadow over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft. Split into five half hour episodes, I enjoyed this production much more than the earlier Mountains of Madness which I felt did not portray the 'horror' as much or as well as this particular tale.

Both stories were read by Richard Coyle and had very high production values and beautifully atmospheric sound effects.

I tend to listen to my DAB radio when modelling or painting, preferring either sport stations (Radio 5, Radio 5 Extra or Talk Sport) and speech or drama stations (Radio 4 Extra, which until recently was called Radio 7 and Radio 4). These audio books are a great way of passing the time while in 'the-shed-at-the-bottom-of-the-garden'.

Simians and a standing stone

Continuing with my painting marathon and trying to make a dent in my 'lead mountain' I have based and painted these Monkeys for my Flash Gordon collection.

The group of four simians were all painted over a simple black basecoat.

Photo Two - The metal monkeys - three miniatures from Lance and Laser (an American based miniatures company). Two are based on 30mm round bases, the third on a 40mm base.

Photo Three - A resin monkey sitting on top of a tree trunk. The figure was picked up at a tradeshow some time ago and has sat contently in my 'too-do' box for some time. Once again painted over a black undercoat and mounted on a 30mm round base.

Photo Four - The standing stone. Following an earlier post where I had based a simple stone from the garden on a Milliput base my Wife found this small strip of slate and asked me if I wanted it. The stone is a simple slate off-cut superglued to a 40mm round base and the groundwork built up with Milliput then textured with sieved stones and fine sand. The stone stands 65mm tall.

This particular image reminds me of a scene from a film! Any ideas which one?

The Coronation by Boris Akunin

Earlier this week I finished the latest Erast Fandorin novel The Coronation by Boris Akunin. For anyone not familiar with this series of Russian themed books, I would describe them as a Russian Sherlock Holmes, 'Who Dunnit', beautifully written and with well drawn-out characters and plots.

The Coronation places Fandorin at the heart of the Russian Coronation and right in the middle of a kidnap attempt. The story is written from the stand point of the head servant and this offers and interesting and sometimes amusing view of life at a Russian Royal Household.

I will not give away too much in the way of plot but will say that I found it flowed and moved along quickly. I would recommend that new readers start with book one - The Winter Queen as this sets up back-story for the stammering hero, Erast Fandorin. The second series of books by Boris Akunin, The Sister Pelagia mysteries are also worth checking out.

For full details search out Boris Akunin - all of his books are available via the library or cheaply in second-hand book stores. I would recommend these two series of novels to anyone interested in who dunnit or Sherlock Holmes style genres.

Prince Vultan Leader of the Hawkmen - part two

In this post I have detailed the steps in painting my 40mm Flash Gordon Miniature conversion of Prince Vultan, Leader of the Hawkmen.

Photo One - The finished Prince Vultan, just awaiting some static grass clumps.

Photo Two - The miniature painted with matt black spray paint.

Photo Three - To help define the different areas I dry brushed the whole figure with Scorched Brown from Vallejo.

Photo Four - Starting with the flesh areas which were built up over Snakebite Leather from Games Workshop.

Photo Five - the Bronze breastplate was built up over Scorched Brown, using various GW Metallic paints, while the kilt or skirt was painted red to match in with my existing Hawkmen.

Photo Six - Next was the base. The groundwork is Scorched Brown with snakebite Leather highlights and the stones are a mix of Chaos Black and Skull White with individual stones picked out in the same mix.

Photo Seven - My first attempt at the wings.

Photo Eight - The wings further highlighted with the small white feather painted white rather than drybrushed white. I think this looks better and fits my other Hawkmen better.

Photos Nine and Ten - The finished figure from different angles and with all the painting complete.

Photo Eleven - Finished and shown alongside one of the original Hawkmen conversions for comparison.

Finally, I have tried (very hard) to paint this particular miniature to a higher standard, however I am disappoint with the finish and quality I have achieved. I am uncertain if my miniature painting skills have improved over the last ten years, feeling that my original Flash Gordon miniature (see much earlier posts) was one of my better painted figures.

I have thought long and hard over this and believe that 'washes' although much easier to use have in fact given my newly painted miniatures a rather dull look.

Overall I am pleased with the figure and proud to have it as a gaming piece. I just wish I could 'take the next step' and have Superb painted figures, rather than just practical or gaming miniatures. By the way I do not feel the same about my Flintloque figures, which I quite enjoy painting in a 'cartoon-y' style.

Having concentrated on my Flash Gordon collection for some weeks, I should now move back to something else - however my painting desk is currently full of FG miniatures, so just maybe there are more to come over the next couple of weeks.

Prince Vultan Leader of the Hawkmen - part one

Following on from earlier posts, here is the latest addition to my 40mm Flash Gordon collection - Prince Vultan, Leader of the Hawkmen.

In this post I have detailed the construction of this miniature, what figures were used and some of the background to this character model.

This is the third Vultan I have attempted to sculpt - the first two being consigned to the bin! I have wanted a Vultan for some years and have been building up quite a collection of parts in preparation for this project. I have based the figure on the three most iconic Vultan images; Alex Raymond's comic strip, The original Buster Crabbe black and white cinema serial and Brian Blessed in the 'Queen soundtrack' Film from the 80's.

Starting from the bottom the figure is constructed from;

A 40mm Privateer Press round base (with some additional lead weights hidden beneath the lipped base).

A base of 1mm plastic card to raise the figure and give it some height.

The legs are from a Denizen Miniatures Giant figure bought off e-bay.

The chest and arms are from the 40mm Spartan Miniatures Hoplite blister pack.

The mace is a round topped dress-makers pin running through re-modelled hands.

The head is a Rasputin head from Graven Images (part of the Hellboy limited edition set).

While the wings are from a 28mm Harbinger figure given away free with subscriptions to Harbinger Magazine (now out-of-production).

Plus loads of Milliput and Green Stuff.

The modelling and sculpting has taken a full week of evenings with most of this time being spent waiting for the Green stuff to fully harden. I have no plans for painting this miniature straight away, but promise to keep the Blog updates with developments.

Flash Gordon Frigia Officer

Over the last year my 40mm Flash Gordon project has been moved to 'the back burner' with other modelling commissions and work taking priority. The impetus of finishing both The Dracci and The Crystalline Entity has changed this.

For newcomers and some who might have thought that I had shelved this project I thought that I would give some background;

Many years ago I saw a couple of painted figures showing Flash Gordon and Ming at a local Wargame Show. I think it was Alumwell and the figures were on the Foundry stand (displayed in a glass cabinet). I was smitten and bought the two miniatures there and then. Back home I based and painted them in the same colours as the Alex Raymond comic strip. I later found out that they were Graven Images/Cliffhanger figures sold by Monolith Designs and modelled by Jim Bowen. I ordered some of the characters and troopers in the hope that I could build up a collection of Flash Gordon themed gaming miniatures.

Further orders followed. However, It soon became apparent that the range was not going to be extended and in frustration I started looking around for suitable 'stand-in' miniatures to use alongside the initial releases. Now, many years on I have a large collection of miniatures from dozens of manufacturers and some themed gaming boards (see earlier Flash Gordon Labels).

The whole project has 'grown' and with loads of support from fellow enthusiasts I regularly received e-mails and comments about possible miniatures that might work alongside the original 40mm Cliffhanger releases.

As a natural progression, I started to convert plastic, resin and metal figures to increase my (unique) collection, for example the Hawkmen, Prince Balin and Dale Arden figures. This Frigia Officer is a conversion of one of the Mongo Officers. Using a horse tail crest from one of my Spartan Games Hoplites and some Green Stuff.

It has always been my intention that I would roleplay with these figures and have a number of different rulebooks and reference material. So far there have been very few games, but the collection continues to grow.

Photo Two - Shows the bare metal miniature based on a 40mm round base from Privateer Press, with the new crest and both Milliput and Green Stuff sculpting. I have always found Jim's sculpting easy to copy and although I would only describe myself as a proficient 'prodder of Green Stuff', I am never-the-less very proud of my attempts.

Photo Four - As usual, I have started with the flesh areas and built up the colour from Games Workshop Snakebite Leather.

Photo Five - The Bronze areas are layered over a Charred Brown base and highlighted with pure Gold acrylic paint.

Photo Six - I wanted a different uniform colour from my earlier troopers and choose Blue, Enchanted Blue over Midnight Blue. Now that the figure is finished and varnished I think that I might have preferred a red uniform instead. Throughout all of these photos, I have touched-up the black areas before moving on to the next stage.

Photo Seven - More detail painting. I choose the red rest to add some much needed colour to the miniature.

Photo Eight - The finished, varnished and flocked Frigia Officer.

I have long harboured plans for a couple of Molemen, an Octopus-headed Humanoid and of course a Brian Blessed Vultan. All of which WILL be detailed here on this Blog should they ever materialise.

The Emperor's Old Clothes - a short story

Dracci for Flash Gordon

I have commented in earlier posts about my intention to clear some of my large lead mountain. This post shows the latest additions to my 40mm Flash Gordon collection - a group of three Dracci or huge Lizardmen/Dragonmen.

Photo One - The group of three Dracci. The miniatures are from Alternative Armies Dracci Lords (95541) and are huge miniatures standing over 55mm tall. For more details see this link

Photos Two, Three and Four - Detail images of all three Dracci. Each figure in mounted on to a 40mm round base with the groundwork built up from portions of broken cork and Milliput.

The Dracci miniatures are quite fantastic sculpts, full of character and beautifully detailed. The only issue I had was the Dracci with the spear had a miscast tail and needed a little bit of Green Stuff to repair the lost texture.

All three have sat on my 'too-do' shelf for at least a year (maybe longer). It is great to see them eventually painted and varnished.

Photo Five - A simple image showing a 40mm Graven Images/Cliffhanger Mongo Trooper also mounted on a 40mm round base next to the tallest Dracci Lord to give an idea of how tall this model is. Each Dracci would 'tower over' any 28mm/30mm figure.

Photos Six and Seven - The 40mm Flash Gordon collection started many years ago with just two models - Flash and Ming, since then it has grown to over 100 miniatures with figures from loads of different manufacturers most mounted on to 40mm/50mm round bases. These two images give some idea of the total collection, currently housed in a simple white drawer. For larger images, just click on the photos.

I am sure that I will add to the collection over the next months, but for now it is pleasing to be able to show the whole group.

Working with Magnets

I recently met up with some lads who were attempting to add small Neodymium magnets to some resin models. I gave them the best advice I could but also posted a couple of enquiries over on The Miniatures Page (TMP) and Lead Adventure (LAF).

My enquiries were rewarded with a couple of great tutorials and information sites. I have copied the links in the hope that they will be of use to anyone trying to 'magnetize' their models. Have fun 'playing with your magnets.'

A Quartet of Deadloque Characters - part four

Number four in my small themed collection of Deadloque miniatures. This one is a Grenadier Miniatures Ghost (M18) bought off e-bay and modified for Flintloque/Deadloque gaming. The lower body has been extended (a paperclip and some Green Stuff) and a modified Czapka (hat) added from the lancer from the original Deadloque box set (5002).

Mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up with Milliput and sieved sand.

This photo shows the new and the old Ghost, both modified and as you can see painted in different colour schemes. I think I prefer the all grey version rather than the one with the black/red shako.

All four Deadloque Characters based, painted and varnished. One stock Deadloque, two modified Deadloque and one Grenadier Miniatures figure. All-in-all I am pleased that I have been able to clear some of my lead mountain and hope that these step-by-step images have been of interest.

A Quartet of Deadloque Characters - part three

My third Deadloque Character is the famous (sorry infamous) KGB Officer from the original Deadloque boxed set (5002). This figure has remained on my too-do list for some time as the model had some severe miss-casting running down either side of the lower body. I filed most of the join down and filled the rest with Milliput. The Bicorne is from my Uncle Rogipoos VLE figure (VLE 10) with the width built up with Milliput and the cockade and feather enlarged with Milliput and Green Stuff. Additional detailing is Green Stuff.

The bicorne is 'pinned' to the head or skull with a short section of paperclip.

The following photos show the development which deviates from my usual painting style as I have painted the large brown coat first rather than the flesh (or lack of flesh) area.

This is quite a large model and the addition of the tall bicorne (with feather) makes him even taller. I have painted him in a different colour scheme than my original KGB miniature to give some variety. The flesh or bone areas are painted very white as I was looking to Terry Pratchett's DEATH for inspiration.

A Quartet of Deadloque Characters - part two

The second in my quartet of Deadloque characters is a rather imperious looking ghoul. I have used the body of one of the Ferach elves from the Lady Wintermore's Fang boxed set (5005) and the head of the Vampire from the Czarlingrad blister. I have also added some Green Stuff detailing and mounted the miniature on to a 2p coin.

The following series of photos shows how the painting progressed.

A Quartet of Deadloque Characters

In an attempt to clear some of my crowded workbench/lead mountain I decided to paint up four Flintloque/Deadloque miniatures. I have started with this decaying officer from 55005 Latrinslav Command which has been sitting patiently in my to-do tray for quite some time.

This work-in-progress shot shows the figure undercoated in black and the flesh areas painted a diseased green. The miniature is mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up with Milliput.

Over the next week I will write similar posts detailing all four of these Undead characters.

I am attempting to clear my Flintloque lead mountain and after reading a post/blog where the modeller was attempting to paint 365 figures in a year - I felt that I should at least try to get some painting done.

Nude Character for Typhon

The latest addition to my 40mm Typhon project is this character miniature from Graven Images. Part of the four figure Bronze Age blister that I originally picked up to supplement my Flash Gordon figures.

The model is mounted on to an old style 1d coin which was picked up on e-bay and painted and based to match in with my Typhon or Greek Mythology figures. There is not much to say on this mini. I am just pleased that I have finally got around to painting him.

I really must get on with painting up my Spartan Miniatures Greek Heroes and Hoplites.

Small Spanish Hovel

It has been some time since I first started this small Spanish themed house or hovel. The main construction is 5mm Foamboard with a DAS skin and plastic bead roof.

The model is small - just 70mm x 50mm but is mounted on to a larger oval of MDF which is further decorated with a white metal wall section from Alternative Armies, a resin barrel and a small resin sack. The building was inspired by a similar model featured in Roy Porter's book Model Building Masterclass published by Windrow & Greene Publishing. (Pages 48 - 57).

Having laid unfinished for over two years it was good to see it finally completed. The painting is built-up over a white basecoat and much more 'pastel' than my usual offerings. I hope you like the contrast.

The Mammoth Book of Horror Comics

I recently received this book as an anniversary present from my Wife. With 544 pages and fully illustrated throughout with vintage black and white horror stories I have found it to be a great read.

As the cover states - Over 50 of the greatest horror comics and graphic short stories ever produced. My particular copy was a charity shop find and picked up for just £1.50 and not the list price of £12.99.

The format is reproductions of classic horror comic covers and at least one story from each publisher. Content ranges from early 1940's Pulp through Lovecraft and eventually 21st Century Graphic novels.

Witchlands Tomb - A 28mm Masterclass

Dwarf Statue

This is a model of the great Dwarf hero Baldur and was built on a whim after I picked up the Galactic Warriors model from a charity shop in Pershore for just £2.00.

The box was in very good condition with the white resin/plaster model wrapped in bubble-wrap, a paint brush and some small pots of acrylic paint were included (see packaging).

The model is really too tall as a 28mm scale statue, towering over my Flintloque miniatures, but this is a project I have been looking at modelling for some time and Baldur was a very famous Dwarf - so a large statue seems fitting.

The plinth was built up with plastic card over a small wooden block. I removed a disc of resin/plaster from the base of the model - a good 10mm and mounted this into the plinth (rather than on top of it). The base of the figure was then 'blended-in' with standard Milliput.

The base was further detailed with strips of Wills cobbles (textured plastic card).

Here you see the base and cobbles in greater detail. The additional texture on the plinth is acrylic texturing medium/acrylic paint with some very fine grit added.

I was originally not going to add a separate base, but at the last moment mounted the whole statue on to an oval of 3mm thick plastic card. This was further textured with sieved sand and fine stones.

As above, but from a different angle. The boundary stones are 3mm thick plastic card cut into to strips and textured with a large rough stone from the garden - I press the stone into the plastic card which gives just the right amount of surface detail.

The whole model was first painted white and then washed with a very dilute Burnt Umber craft paint. The base was painted with GW Snakebite Leather and highlighted with Snakebite/Skull White. Some of the larger stones were picked out in Grey. I have varnished the whole model, plinth and base with Galleria Matt varnish.

The Statue mounted, painted and flocked.

I have no idea how this statue will be used in my games of Flintloque. As stated above, once I saw the figure I just knew I had to model it! I hope that you like it.

An Ogre of Valon - part seven

At long last the Ogre Sergeant is finished, fully based painted and varnished.

The axe head and shaft have been painted. I have also re-painted the trousers in a slightly lighter shade of brown and the rest of the metalwork has been detailed.

The whole model and base was first gloss varnished and then matt varnished before I added some ground foam foliage and a grass tuft.

Enjoy.

As stated in earlier posts - this model was never intended as a gaming piece and was in fact built as a desk oriment. I am still undecided about what I will do with the figure and am thinking about awarding it as a prize or running a competition. More details to follow.

The Legend of Baldur - a short story

The White Liar themed or framed stories use the Flintloque/Slaughterloo background to introduce new writing or short stories by using a tried and proven method of the same introductory paragraph and the 'hook' of stories or tales told in a local tavern - The White Liar. The idea is not original, but can inspire some entertaining writing.

The model featured below was inspired by this particular tale and shows Baldur (a regal Dwarf) on a scratch built plinth. The Flintloque miniature to the front gives some idea of the size of this model.

My plan is to include a separate Blog post giving details of how the model was built, based and painted.

A Crystaline Entity for Flash Gordon

August Bank Holiday and I thought I would post something different. Here is my latest 40mm Flash Gordon monster - A Crystaline Entity. It has been quite some time since I added to this project and when I saw this Ice Golem from Ral Partha on e-bay, I thought it would make a great Flash monster to add to my collection.

There isn't much to say about the model, the basing or the painting as it really is a simple sculpt to finish off. I mounted the 'slotta-base' figure onto a 40mm round base, building up the groundwork with pieces of broken cork and Green Stuff. The figure was basecoated white and washed with dilute blue ink (Warzone) before being dry-brushed with GW Skull White. In fact it took longer to paint the base than the figure!

I have left the model gloss varnished and only matt varnished the base prior to adding some static-grass. A very simple model to complete - just as I like it.

The figure is 40mm tall head-to-toe or 60mm top of claw-to-toe. The very small area of base of foot to groundwork makes this a very fragile model. I will have to be extra careful in handling this monster.

These two images show the monster alongside a couple of my 40mm Flash characters, an Emperor Ming Officer and the Rocketeer.

Recent posts on The Miniatures Page (TMP) have tempted me back into modelling and painting 40mm Flash Gordon models.

An Ogre of Valon - part six

I have finished painting the groundwork and as previously noted I was trying for a desert or Southern Spain bare rock colour scheme which I have achieved by building up the colour over an Umber and Snakebite Leather base with GW Washes. The flask was painted in the traditional white glaze over terracotta scheme and still needs some touching-up.

I am unhappy with the trousers which I feel look too dark however this may be dulled down when I come to varnishing the miniature. It maybe the dark washes? I have used Chestnut Ink an old pot of ink from GW.

In this image you can see that I have added a cork for the flask. It is a small section of cocktail stick which has been superglued down and washed with Sepia - a small addition, but one that I feel adds to the base.

I am getting very close to finishing this model and painting the fine detail will be the next task.

An Ogre of Valon - part five

Since the last post I have moved along quite a bit as you can see. The trousers/overalls have been painted brown and the white piping has been finished, I have also started work on the black strapping, equipment and knapsack.

I am happier with the flesh areas which I have both 'washed' and further highlighted.

In my next post I will detail how I painted the base, I am looking for a bleached and semi-desert colour scheme which I feel is in keeping with parts of Southern Spain/Portugal.

I recently saw this Marauder Ogre on e-bay, currently going for £20.00!

My Daughter moves to Thailand

As I write this Holly is still in the air on her way to her new job as a teacher in Bangkok. Sue and I dropped her off at Heathrow yesterday evening. Holly is off on a two year contract to teach english and drama in Thailand.

I will miss her, actually miss the fact that even on her own she's a houseful! I won't miss all the lists and finding bobbings and hairpins everywhere.

The Larrey Ambulance a 28mm Masterclass on Barking Irons Online

Barking Irons Online has another Modelling Masterclass; The Larrey Ambulance which was modelled and painted by me some time ago and was originally intended to be included in the 'paper based' Barking Irons magazine. Here are a couple of images which show the finished model, based and varnished ready for a game of Flintloque.

Although it is not obvious in these photos, there is a 28mm Ferach in the rear of the ambulance - the injured Ferach Elf on a stretcher from the Elf Field Hospital set (51503).

The model was produced some time ago and the article was written to be included in the 'paper based' Barking Irons magazine from Alternative Armies. Later when I was asked to produce these Masterclass tutorials I met up with Craig and was showing him some of my Flintloque inspired terrain. Craig was aware of the Larrey Ambulance article but it had been lost and so I had to search my records and photo files for this article and images.

Craig has reproduced it for the August Masterclass entry on Barking Irons Online. Check out the other Masterclass articles when you are visiting.

Stone Barn an on-line build part five

Some time ago I started this On-Line build to show how this old model was re-painted. At long last it is finished, for more information see this post this post and this post

The model was built over twenty years ago (maybe even twenty five years) and is constructed from card that was originally used as advertising material/display material for Gonzalez Byass Sherry! The surface detail is DAS modelling clay and as you can see it has held-up well to the rigours of gaming and being stored in the attic.

The model is quite large (too large) at 300m long x 100mm wide and 120mm tall.

Here you see some close-ups of the stonework and surface detail. I feel that I have improved somewhat since these (very) early modelling tests, but am still proud of the technique and sculpting. For those who are interested the stones were first spread out on a glass cutting board and when cut to shape were added one-by-one to the building frame over a layer of uPVA glue. The roof tiles (stones) are individual DAS pieces which I think work well on some models but looks a little hap-hazard on this one.

The Stone Barn has given sterling service and has been re-based once and re-painted twice since first modelled. Of note is the fact that it was originally built with a open base (on a hollow card shell) but has now been mounted onto a 3mm thick plastic card base with the groundwork built up from DAS and Milliput.

The green growth climbing up the side of the building is made from small clumps of foam, superglued on to the walls and then covered in fine sand.

For anyone considering a similar modelling project I would recommend making it a little smaller with a 160mm x 100mm footprint being easier and more practical.

At this moment I am not sure what I will do with this model - nostalgia says keep it, but I am not sure that it fits in with my 'other' terrain pieces being a little too large and coarse. I have other 'early' DAS models stored in the attic which I may well remodel and re-paint at some time.

An Ogre of Valon - part four

A quick 'n' dirty update. First the red uniform. I have used Red Gore as a base and Blood Red as a highlight, once fully dry I washed the area with Baal Red wash from GW. (Note; I have only Basecoated and then one highlight - I find this works better with red, which can be highlighted too much and either look orange or worst still pink!)

Next we have the 'buff' cuffs and turnbacks. I started with a 50/50 mix of Snakebite Leather and Bad Moon Yellow then highlighted with Bad Moon Yellow and later an extreme yellow highlight of Craft Paint Gloss Yellow which looks a little strange at the moment - but should dull down once matt varnished.

There is still a lot to do, but I am enjoying this On-Line Build, something that has been on my 'too do' list for some time.
