So how many Flintloque minis do you own?

Earlier this week, I was reading about people who collect Panini football stickers and try to completely fill their Panini albums - this got me thinking.....

Do you own EVERY Flintloque/Slaughterloo miniature from Alternative Armies?

I don't.

I know that I have many, (OK most), but not every mini, so how close are you to having a full set - a full album and how many are painted?

Magazine haul

Earlier today Sue and I drove out to Bewdley and had a delightful walk along the river. On the way back home I stopped off at Bewdley railway station on The Severn Valley Railway and picked up these magazines from one of the charity wagons situated in the car park. Nine secondhand magazines for just £1.80

This is the first time Sue and I have visited Bewdley in over 15 months and it was a real treat to once again be able to visit this beautiful riverside town.

After quarantine - 72 hours in the garage, I'll have great fun reading these sitting in the garden.

What next for my magazine articles/tutorials?

Earlier this month I posted details of part one of my Windmill build featured in Miniature Wargames issue 457. Next month the second part will show how the model was painted and finished. See this post for more information.

I'm now looking around for some inspiration - maybe even suggestions as to what next!

Do you have any suggestions - remember, the more unusual the better. I want to be 'pushed' and not just produce variations on a theme.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwher - the skirmish

From the start of this project it has always been my aim to have the Dwarf Landwehr assaulting a lone werewolf in a skirmish game setting. I'm still working on the details and have yet to start the gaming board, but I think this image shows what I'm attempting.

For details of the type of encounter I'm trying for, see this illustration.

Further details should follow but don't expect anything too soon.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwehr - the werewolf is finished

The painted and varnished miniature has now had some static grass and tufts glued to the base.

and another image, this time taken from the rear to show the highlighted fur colour.

The final images shows the finished werewolf alongside a hapless Dwarf Landwehr. I don't think much of his chances.....

The werewolf and Dwarves were inspired by this illustration.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwehr - painting the werewolf fur

The fur was built up over the black/dark brown basecoat and drybrushed with both grey and brown to give a more natural coloured fur. Detail painting was restricted to red eyes, mouth and claws while the base was painted in my usual Snakebite Leather colour (mixed from various leather or brown acrylic paints).

Further drybrushing and washes helped to both define the sculpting and make the fur colour less stark.

The werewolf model was then varnished with a gloss varnish (for strength).....

and then matt varnished.

The next step will be adding some decoration to the base.

Practical and Simple Wargame Terrain - part ten

This is part one of the tenth 'how-to' magazine article showing how I build simple and practical wargame buildings from everyday and easily sourced materials. Miniature Wargames issue 457 (May 2021) has full details of how this 1/56th scale Easter European Windmill was built (there will be a separate article on how it was painted and finished in next months issue).

For more information on the magazine contents - see this link.

Previous tutorials include; A Theme Park Cottage

A Prussian Barn

A Stone Cottage

A Timber Framed House

A Round Dovecot

A Thatched Cottage

European Barn

Wooden Shack

And Thatched Hovel

Next month will see the culmination of a year-long project which was originally written as a test to see if I could build simple wargame models from simple materials - the sort that you could easily find around the house like cardboard, egg box card, lollipop sticks and kitchen scourers. It is my intention to expand both the text and the number of images and produce a self-published Dampfanzerwagon Guide No. 4 Simple and Practical Wargame Buildings For Wargamers sometime in the next couple of months. The book/guide will be a full colour, A4 sized and limited edition book. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please check back in a couple of months when I should have more details.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwehr - the werewolf first paint

Not much of an update but I have now basecoated the werewolf with a dark brown/black base. This basecoat was painted by brush over a Tamiya spray can primer.

I will try to get some 'real' colour on the mini soon.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwehr - sculpting fur on the werewolf

The Reaper Miniatures Werewolf was mounted on to a pre-decimalisation Penny. I modified the metal base by cutting out a segment and closing the gap between the legs in order to get it to fit on the Penny. this gave the werewolf a more upright and taller stance.

I used a mixture of both Milliput and Green Stuff to add some musculature and 'body' to the upper shoulders and head then built up the base with more of the same mix.

The base was further textured with some sieved stones and fine sand which was glued in place with PVA glue.

The final image shows the sculpting work to the rear of the model. I used a scalpel blade dipped in water to add fur texture to the miniature.

Scratch Built Narrow Gauge Ore Wagons - more additional content

This post shows some of the scratch built wagon loads I have built which allow me to show some variety on my 1:27.7 or 11mm = 1 foot narrow gauge railway train/layout. For more information on these wagons, see this earlier post or here which details a magazine article published in Narrow Gauge World (issue 154).

Each of the wagon loads are stand alone pieces and can if I wish, be displayed on the loading dock if needed. In this image you can see one of my highly modified and resin castings of an engine driver.

The cable drum.

A scratch built cable drum built from plastic card and some jewellery making wire, it was painted in a well-worn, untreated wood colour with rusted bolts and streaking.

The hoist wheel.

The wheel is a plastic Meccano type wheel that I found in my spares box. The wooden support was built from more plastic card. I painted it in a very rusty and worn patina with paints mixed from Chocolate Brown and Hot Orange (Vallejo).

Packing Cases.

The larger wooden packing case was built from plastic card strips over a wooden former while the wicker basket is a 1:43.5 or O gauge casting. Both have been painted with various acrylic paints and weathered with weathering powders.

I have a couple more items of clutter that I can use as wagon loads and I may post images at a later date.

Flintloque Dwarf Landwehr - the werewolf

With the eight Flintloque Landwehr completed I now started looking around for a suitable werewolf miniature, one that was rearing up and large enough to match the original illustration by Jakob Rozalski. You can find more illustrations here. In addition I wanted the miniature to 'tower' over the standard Flintloque Dwarf.

After a couple of false starts, I choose this Werewolf Alpha from Reaper Miniatures.

The werewolf is from the Dark Heaven Legends range - 03946 sculpted by T. Manor. It is a two-part metal model and will require some modification to match the Rozalski artwork. The werewolf stands just over 55mm tall to top of claw.

Expect more updates soon.
