Building Wargame Terrain - a very special anniversary

It has been ten year since I self published my first Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No. 1 - Building Wargame Terrain. The book was released in May 2013 after about six months work, producing the tutorials and arranging for the book to be published. The first print run ran out very quickly and two subsequent reprints meant that this guide was the most produced of the three guides written and published by me.

I think of it as a great success, but also believe that knowing what I know now, I would have done it slightly differently - possibly a Kickstarter!

I don't think that this book will be reprinted - at least not in this format. The two following Dampfpanzerwagon Guides - More Wargame Terrain and Models for Wargamers have both been reprinted, but have not been as successful as the first book. All three are now out-of-print.

I sometimes see this and other books or guides written by me come up for sale on ebay and can even report that I have seen some of them for sale in secondhand book stores - now there's a recommendation.....

Thanks to everyone who supported me with this project.

I can't help looking back and not quite believing that it has been ten years. Since then I have produced two books for Pen & Sword as well as hundreds of magazine articles that are mainly, but not exclusively wargaming based.

I wonder what the next ten years has in store?

Models for Wargames book now in very short supply

A recent spate of orders has left me with very few copies to sell. This really is your last chance to purchase a copy.

Should you wish to order one of the very last copies - please see this link.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this and the earlier two self published books.

Justice League Tower from Wargames Illustrated issue 406

The latest issue of Wargames Illustrated, (issue 406, October 2021) features the first of what I hope to be a series of articles showing how I build themed wargame terrain based of images from the movies. The first is this Justice League Tower which features in the DC film Justice League. The tower is on screen for less than a minute but when I saw the structure I just knew that I had to make a model of it.

The model is built from cardboard, foamboard and egg box card with an insulation foam roof and painted with acrylics. For more information, you can pick up the magazine and read the seven page article/tutorial.

I have in the past built a number of wargame structures inspired by movie images, which have been featured in various magazines and books, for example this Star Wars house which was published in Miniature Wargames issue 432

and this model of Bir Acroma which featured in the Humphrey Bogart film Sahara from 1943. Bir Acroma is one of the models included in the Pen & Sword book - Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and the Middle East which was written by me.

In addition, I have made a model of the submarine from Ice Station Zebra and the Dragon Tank from Dr.No.

If you have any suggestions for future themed articles - FROM THE MOVIES please get in touch and I'll look at using them in future model builds.

Tony

Update;

I've included this Editor's Tour of WI406 from You Tube for you to check out. See this link for full details.

Wargames Terrain & Buildings - WW1 Trench Systems

I recently became aware of this book from Pen & Sword - Wargames Terrain & Buildings - WW1 Trench Systems by Douglas Hardy. Regular readers and followers will know that this is the third book in this series published by Pen & Sword, the first two being; Wargames Terrain & Buildings - The Napoleonic Wars and Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and The Middle East, both written by me.

I should make it clear that I have nothing to do with this third book, but thought it would be of interest and worth posting a link. For more information I have included this You Tube link.

Good luck to Douglas and Pen & Sword.

Sahara - M3 Lulubelle from Miniart

Images taken from The Modelling News 26.05.2021

While browsing the internet earlier today, I came across this new release from Miniart - The M3 Lee featured in the film/films Sahara. There have been two versions of the film, a later re-make with Jim Belushi and the classic Humphrey Bogart which in my opinion is so much better. (See image below).

For more details of the M3 Lee release, see this link.

The earlier 1943 film inspired me to build a 1/56th scale model of Bir Acroma the centre piece of the climactic battle. The model features in my Pen & Sword book Wargames Terrain & Buildings North Africa and The Middle East. For details of how to order a copy see this link.

Here are a couple of images of the finished model.

I've see both films and although the earlier film is in black and white and has some anomalies, I prefer it to the later re-make. What do you think?

Wargames Terrain & Building - North Africa and the Middle East latest update.....

Exactly one day after the West Midlands Military Show (Alumwell) the author's copies of my latest Pen & Sword book Wargames Terrain & Building - North Africa and the Middle East arrived. It would have been very difficult to have attended Alumwell as an exhibitor without at least one copy of the book to show - so I think I did the right thing by not attending as an exhibitor and just having a fun day out.

More details about this latest book can be found by following this Blog link or going to the label to the right. I have included an image of the contents page to give prospective purchasers a better idea of what to expect.

I would say this - but I think book two is even better than book one Wargames Terrain & Buildings - The Napoleonic Wars.

Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and the Middle East is now shipping

Earlier today, I was informed that my latest Pen & Sword book - Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and the Middle East is now being shipped for review and pre-orders. Ironically the book should now be available for this weekend and in time for The West Midlands Military Show, Alumwell. If I could have guaranteed availability, I might have reconsidered my decision not to attend as an exhibitor!

For full details of the book see this Blog link.

I have been told that my authors copies are now on their way to me. Once I have my copies, I will post again.....

Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and the Middle East Book

Earlier this week I came across this image of the new Pen & Sword book Wargames Terrain & Buildings - North Africa and the Middle East. A terrain building book written by me and due for release in 2020. As you can see it has a different front cover design showing the Middle East Mosque rather than the Mud Brick Built House of the earlier example (see below).

I think I prefer the Mosque version. For more information see this link.

I will post more details once I have firm information on the actual release date.

28mm Walls from Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No. 1 - Building Wargame Terrain Book

As promised in my earlier post I have included more images of the scratch-built wall sections that were originally featured in the Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No. 1 - Building Wargame Terrain. The images show the four finished models that were built from plastic card and foam. They were painted with a variety of acrylic paint brands and mounted on to a textured plastic card base.

The four sections have now been sold and I am sorry to say that I was unable to find any work-in-progress shots, but should they came to light I will post them on the Blog.

The set of four walls comprised a damaged section with wooden gate, two corner sections and a damaged straight section.

In this image you can see all four pieces.

While in these last images show the wall sections on my gaming board with a 28mm Flintloque miniature alongside - shown for scale.

The damaged gate section is 350mm long x 50mm tall mounted on to a 3mm thick plastic card base 360mm x 75mm.
