Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty seven

There have been a number of posts on different Silver Bayonet themed sites asking "what do you use for Goblins?" I've used these old Games Workshop Snottlings mounted on 1p coins and painted as either traditional Green Goblins, Red Goblins or Redcaps.

The images below show the work-in-progress. To give the miniatures some height and in most cases extra weight, I have mounted the minis on to sections of metal walls from Alternative Armies, resin terrain or small sections of stones (from the garden).

The bases were further textured with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue before being undercoated with a grey spray can.

The final image shows the four Goblins and a hooded Demon alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc. A traditional Snottling stands just 14mm tall (head to toe).

I have some additional Snottling Goblins somewhere in my painted collection and will try to photograph them alongside these figures as soon as I can get in to the attic and search for them.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty six

Today's post features a couple of Pixies for The Silver Bayonet. The miniatures (and yes they are very small) are from the Wargames Foundry/Warmonger range of metal miniatures and are mounted on cut down metal wall sections from Alternative Armies which are then further mounted on to 1p coins with Milliput sculpting and fine sand texturing.

The miniatures were spray painted with a grey undercoat before being painted with a variety of different acrylic paints.

The final image shows these pesky Pixies alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc after they had been varnished with Galleria matt varnish and the bases decorated with static grass and tufts.

The tiny Cherubs stand just 20mm (head to toe).

Markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part three

These objective markers were a case of searching through my 'spares box' for anything that I could re-use as markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. It was a matter of using anything I could find, from reproduction coins to a slab of Plaster of Paris. It was great fun to both model and paint the objective markers and cost nothing!

The markers were based on 35mm wooden counters with the groundwork built up from either Milliput or DAS modelling clay.

These images show the work-in-progress and as you can see the bits really were a haphazard mix of bits of scrap. As a modelling project. I would recommend it to all.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over -part twenty five

Demon for The Silver Bayonet

The model is based on a Metal Giant from the Grim Reaper Nasteez range and had been previously converted, based and basecoated as a Frost Giant for my 40mm Flash Gordon collection. With the launch of The Silver Bayonet, I was looking around for suitable proxy miniatures and thought about using the mini as a Troll, but once I added some bat wings to the shoulders, the figure took on a whole new persona.

The wings were also from my 'spares box' (a bat or lizard mini) and were glued in place after some Dremel surgery. The join was hidden under Green Stuff and the mini was 'cleaned up' ready for undercoating grey. The Demon is mounted on to a 48mm washer with the groundwork built up from Milliput and further textured with sieved stones and sand.

The red colour scheme was copied from a similar Demon miniature seen on the Internet. The colour was built up from a dark chocolate brown and highlighted with bright red from the Golden Acrylics range. The model was then 'washed' with some home-made washes made using watercolur acrylic inks and acrylic medium (both products were Christmas presents) - see this post for more information.

I have varnished the finished figure with both matt and gloss varnishes and decorated the base with static grass and tufts. The Demon miniature is 55mm tall (head to toe) and slightly taller if you measure to the top of the wings. Here you can see him alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc for comparison.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty four

Living Armour for The Silver Bayonet

Regular readers of the blog will be well aware that the new game from Osprey Games - The Silver Bayonet written by Joseph McCullough has been a major inspiration to me, allowing me to re-visit my collection of painted and un-painted Flintloque miniatures and search through my 'bits box' for suitable 'stand-in' minis to use in the game.

This plastic toy figure was bought in Bangkok over ten years ago and had been relegated to the bottom of my 'bits-box' destined to never see the light of day again. That is until I started searching for a suitable miniature to use as Living Armour.

The plastic kit is similar to the small clip-together models which can sometimes be found in Kinder Eggs. In this case a five piece kit moulded in silver.

I mounted the model onto a pre-decimalisation penny and built up the base with Milliput before painting, washing and varnishing the figure. The final image shows the Living Armour alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc. The Living Armour model is 50mm tall (head to toe).

Prior to choosing this base model to represent my Living Armour, I had looked at a number of metal and plastic figures, but nothing inspired me. This Anime style figure had been bought with the intention of painting it as a stone statue (many years ago) but I think it works perfectly as a 'stand-in' Living Armour proxy.

Finally, I should add that I chose today's post from a selection of about five finished Silver Bayonet painted and based figures as I wanted to show something completely different from the normal knight in armour figures that are usually used in SB. I hope you like it.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty three

This is another one of my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet miniatures. A converted Ursa Major bear 102 from the HeroClix Captain America set.

The model was mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up with Milliput and additional texture added with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue.

The bear was painted in a much darker 'black bear' colour scheme and varnished with Galleria matt varnish before the base was decorated with static grass and tufts.

The final image shows the werebear alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc. The bear stands 50mm tall.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty two

Another mini from my 'spares box' - this time a plastic ghost from a D&D box set.

I thought the model was a little too short so mounted the plastic figure on to a piece of thick plastic card and rebuilt the lower edge with Milliput. The base or groundwork was modelled from DAS and additional texture was added with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue.

The paint scheme was a simple white over pale grey with some light green washes on the lower edges.

The final image shows the finished model alongside a Flintloque mini. The ghost was mounted on a 35mm round wooden counter and stands 35mm tall.

Miniature Wargames - A Wooden Store

The latest issue of Miniature Wargames (issue 466 - February 2022) features this scratch built storehouse which was built and painted by me. The model was inspired by a wooden structure found on the internet and modelled from corrugated cardboard with scrap stripwood and egg box card.

For more information, see this link. Or pick up the magazine from your local supplier/store.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty one

A Troll for The Silver Bayonet

This is a Lord of the Rings Troll - actually a LOTR key ring model that was bought many years ago and had been based and undercoated on two separate occasions prior to this incarnation. The model is mounted on to a 50mm metal washer with the groundwork built up from cork and DAS.

I had seen that others have used GW LOTR Troll models for The Silver Bayonet Troll and I knew that I had this model in my 'spares box'. I undercoated the model in gloss varnish and then black acrylic paint before building up the skin colour by speckling with an old brush.

The model stands over 75mm tall and dwarves this Flintloque RifleOrc model.

It has been my intention all through this project to try and use models that I have stored away and un-loved in my 'spares box' or pick up second-hand figures from Worcester Wargames, rather than purchase 'special' sculpts new, this is a perfect example of re-using figures that would otherwise have been left un-finished.

Markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part two

This is another set of wound markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. The skulls were cut from some soft plastic toy skeletons which were bought some time ago then mounted on to wooden counters with the groundwork built up with DAS modelling clay before being textured with sieved stones and sand.

I painted the groundwork first then the skulls before varnishing with Galleria mat varnish.

This counter used the upper body of the plastic skeleton with the back first cut and then sanded flat.

Finally the markers were decorated with some static grass and tufts applied over a mix of PVA and superglue.

The simple markers were great fun to model and paint and once again used up models that would have otherwise been left in my 'spares box.'

Markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over

Regular readers and followers will know that the new game from Osprey Games - The Silver Bayonet has meant that most of my modelling time over the Christmas and New Year period has been either building a Silver Bayonet themed gaming board or painting miniatures for the game. In addition, I have been working on a number of gaming or objective markers and here are the results so far. A group of three wound markers made from wooden counters, DAS modelling clay and some skull castings that I had picked up many years ago.

The wooden counters are from this Bottle Top Challenge game and are 35mm diameter and 4mm thick.

The final two images show the modelled and then the painted markers varnished and decorated with static grass and tufts.

I have already modelled a dozen or so markers and will include details over the next couple of weeks. They have been great fun to build and have meant that I have had to be inventive with various bits and pieces from my 'spares box'.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty

This is the latest painted miniature for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet project, another werewolf. The mini is from the Dreamblade collectable miniatures game - Heart Render No. 85 and is re-based on an old 1d penny with the groundwork built up from Milliput.

"Within each werewolf is an even crueller werwolf struggling to get out."

The mini is still available from Wizards of the Coast and can sometimes be seen on e-bay. The werewolf stands 48mm tall.

Eldar Scrolls gaming board featured in Wargames Illustrated issue 409

The latest issue of Wargames Illustrated (issue 409 - January 2022) page 52, features the Eldar Scrolls gaming board that I built back in 2020 for Modiphius Entertainment. I have commented on this build in previous posts, but I have to say it is one of my favourite commissions and I doubt I will ever get bored of posting links to the finished table and the articles showing how it was built.

For more information, follow the Modiphius links - here.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part nineteen

Continuing with my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet project, this update shows how I modified a couple of wooden rulers into movement measuring sticks. The wooden rulers were bought from The Commandery (an ECW museum in Worcester) and then modified by sanding the reverse (they had the dates and names of the Kings and Queens of England) and trimming to 12 inches before I painted the inches in either red (for the Albion Red Coats) or blue (for the Ferach/French) before I waxed the measuring sticks with clear wax.

The red and blue striped rulers remind me of measuring sticks I had when in school.

Looking forward to 2022

2021 was not the best of years but we did get through it and we are looking forward to 2022 with a little more optimism.

At this time of year I like to write about my plans for the coming year and try to highlight different projects I have or am going to be working on.

Magazine Articles;

In 2021 I had various articles published in Miniature Wargames, Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy and Wargames Illustrated as well as Narrow Gauge World. I can confirm that there will be more of the same and I will be posting details on the blog as and when they are published.

Book Sales;

I have seen a marked increase in sales of Wargames Terrain & Buildings - The Napoleonic Wars as well as selling out of the self published book Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No. 3 - Models For Wargamers. Thank you to everyone who has supported me by picking up a copy/copies.

Model Railway Layout;

I've promised the grandchildren that I will spend more time working on the railway layout - The Yellow Pelican Mining Co. so expect updates once I have the time and the room to work on it.

Miniature Painting;

I have been inspired to paint and convert a number of minis for the new rule set The Silver Bayonet and while there have been a number of different posts recently, I plan to continue posting details of my various Silver Bayonet themed projects, which will include themed terrain. converting miniatures and painting figures. the Silver Bayonet has been a real 'kick in the butt' for me allowing me to revisit my Flintloque collection and search through my bits box for suitable models to convert and paint.

I have included this image of my Dwarf Prussians searching for werewolves. I think it might be a case of werewolves searching for Dwarf Prussians!

I'll keep you updated with regular posts detailing my various projects, but for now, Happy New Year and stay safe.
