Craig Andrews of Orcs in the Webbe has once again decided to produce an Advent. The Orcs in the Webbe Advent is a free resource giving a new short story, gaming scenario or piece of fan fiction each day between now and the 24th of December. For more information about the 2020 OITW Advent and background information, see this link.

Day one Foiling the Lincolnshire Red Terror, of the OITW 2021 advent calendar can be found here.

Happy Advent and thank you to Craig and everyone who takes part.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part eighteen

The Black Dog stand-in has now been matt varnished with small dots of gloss varnish on the mouth, eyes and nose then had the base decorated with static grass and tufts applied over a mix of PVA and superglue.

The final image shows the finished model alongside an Alternative Armies Rifle Orc to give an idea of scale. The Black Dog stands 30mm tall (to it's haunches) and is mounted on to a 50mm metal washer.

As with the earlier French (Ferach) unit this has been a fun project and I'm now looking at what my next Silver Bayonet project can be.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part seventeen

The Black Dog stand-in has now had teeth and eyes painted in. Not a great deal of work, but they do add menace to the supernatural creature.

The base and groundwork has been painted in my usual (home made) GW Snakebite Leather colour with odd stones picked out in grey, highlighted white.

And don't forget the Flintloque flintlock, which I think adds to the base. The mini and base have now been gloss varnished (for strength) and once dry, I will matt varnish and add some static grass.

I am well aware that November has been a little heavy on The Silver Bayonet and I make no apologies for that, but rather promise that there is more to come.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part sixteen

The Black Dog stand-in was painted black (obviously). I used various acrylic paints to which I had added some black wash to ensure an all over base coat.

I then built up the fur in stages using a grey/blue base and highlighting with more blue and a touch of grey which was concentrated on the upper edges leaving the lower edges and belly in the original black.

I then washed the whole model with a mix of black and blue washes diluted with water. The final wash had some purple added just to define the fur. Black is very rarely just black.

I'm pleased with the subtle effect of blue/purple highlights over black and I now just need to paint the features - what little they are!

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part fifteen

The groundwork was textured with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue and I've refined some of the features on the Black Dog with small bits of Green Stuff applied over superglue to give the miniature a bit more character.

The model was then primed with a grey spray can primer in preparation for the painting.

I've been watching a number of different You Tube tutorials on how to paint black fur and look forward to starting the painting of this Silver Bayonet inspired model.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part fourteen

The base for the Black Dog was built up with standard Yellow/Grey Milliput with a flintlock from the Alternative Armies spares/gun pack.

I felt that the base model was a little scrawny and used a mix of Milliput and Green Stuff to bulk up his shoulders and haunches. I then used a scalpel to add the fur texture before leaving it to fully set.

I still think the model and sculpting needs refining, but I'll wait until the weather is a little warmer and I can get down the shed.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirteen

The Black Dog stand-in has been mounted on to a metal washer. I had thought about using a rectangular base, but the dog was a perfect fit on the 50mm washer and I thought that it would give it a point of difference if I then mount my Wolves on to rectangle bases.

The second figure is from the Alternative Armies 54501 Obidiah's Gun box set and I think it will make a perfect witch miniature for my games of Silver Bayonet. I'm thinking about adding a witches pointy hat, but also think it looks OK with a bare head.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twelve

Now that the first group of French (Ferach) Minis have been painted I have been looking around for my next Silver Bayonet project.

These minis were picked up second-hand from Worcester Wargames, Worcester for a couple of pounds. The unidentified wolf will be my Black Dog stand-in and the Flintloque mini will be converted at some stage.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part eleven

This image show all eight Alternative Armies miniatures on my display/gaming board with the scratch-built Silver Bayonet Crypt which has appeared on this Blog and in Miniature Wargames. The unit was painted for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet themed project.

I am now looking for a similar set of eight minis to convert and paint as a Spanish Guerrilla unit and maybe a couple of monsters. I will post details as and when I commence work on them.

The new Silver Bayonet book from Osprey has helped to inspire me to both paint minis and build terrain - which can only be a good thing.

Expect more posts soon.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part ten

With the eight minis painted, it was time to finish the bases. I used my home-made Snakebite Leather colour with both drybrushing and washes to complete the bases then varnished the minis and bases with a hard wearing gloss varnish.

Once the gloss varnish was dry, I re-varnished the unit with matt varnish and touched-in any metal parts with some gloss before decorating the bases with static grass and static grass tufts.

Here is the finished Flintloque/Silver Bayonet unit of French (Ferach) all ready for their first adventure. They really were great fun to modify and paint and I can't wait to get some more Flintloque/Silver Bayonet units and monsters painted up.

Eldar Scrolls Gaming Table featured at Salute 2021

Today's post features a model that I built over two years ago and which has already featured on this Blog - a display board commissioned by Modiphius Games for Eldar Scrolls or Skrym.

The board was one of two display boards that I built for Modiphius and was originally commissioned and constructed for Salute 2020. However as we all know Salute 2020 was postponed due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. Details of the construction and the painting were featured in Miniature Wargames issue 452 and 543. For more details see these Blog posts here and here.

In 2021 Salute was once again postponed but did eventually go ahead earlier this month. Over the last couple of days I have found images and You Tube reports of the show which feature this Eldar Scrolls board and have included the links and time stand for you to check out the board.

Salute Round up 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Salute 2021 Report 21 minutes, 10 seconds.

The best tables at Salute 2021 10 minutes, 20 seconds.

Salute 2021 7 minutes, 39 seconds.

In The Studio 1 minute, 33 seconds.

Finally, I would ask all readers of this Blog to comment if they have found any other images of the gaming table.

Thank you.

A Flea Market Purchase

This well-worm wooden mallet was picket up at one of the Malvern Flea Markets earlier this year for just 50p. It was in a very sorry state and you might have been forgiven for thinking that it was a waste of 50p.

But after taking it apart, trimming the head and shortening the handle I was able to sand the wood and polish it with clear wax to produce this.

November has been a bit Silver Bayonet heavy and this post is no exception. Taking inspiration from this image (see below), I carved the mystic sign on to the mallet head and now have a Silver Bayonet themed mallet.

No doubt the SB theme will continue for a while (sorry) with the Elf (French) unit taking pride of place, but once they are finished, I'll need an opposition force.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part nine

Another day and another post.....

The mini painting is progressing well and I'm enjoying the laid-back painting (I'm in no rush).

More images and another update soon.

Miniature Wargames issue 464 - A Crypt for The Silver Bayonet

The latest issue of Miniature Wargames (issue 464 from December 2021) has an article showing how I built and painted this crypt inspired by the illustration found in the new wargame rules book The Silver Bayonet written by Joseph a. McCullough.

Once I saw the illustration I knew that I just had to build a copy for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. After approaching the editor and supplying the initial sketches, it was a race against time to get the model finished in time to get it published.

I have included the illustration from The Silver Bayonet which is used without permission to illustrate the model and magazine article.

For more information see the magazine.

The simple model was great fun to produce and I look forward to building more model terrain inspired by the book.

The Silver Bayonet from Osprey

My copy of The Silver Bayonet a Wargame of Napoleonic Gothic Horror arrived yesterday. I've not had time to fully read through, but my first impressions are that this is a game system that I will enjoy.

I will give a more detailed review once I have had time to study the rules.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part eight

Progress is a little slow, but I'm not bothered as I'm enjoying the laid-back painting. As you can see I have continued with the haphazard colour schemes, making each Alternative Armies mini a character and taking time to paint every piece of equipment (there are quite a few bits) with a base colour and a number of highlights.

I am still awaiting my copy of The Silver Bayonet. I have seen on different sites that the book has been posted out to a number of people so I'm hoping that I will have mine soon.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part seven

I have started to paint the uniforms. Given that the minis come from a variety of different Alternative Armies product codes I have purposely tried to vary the colours and styles of uniform and equipment to give a more 'run-down' feel to the unit while still trying to remain true to the source material and references I have.

I'll continue to add paint over the next couple of days, but have to admit to enjoying this little side project, plus very much looking forward to receiving my copy of The Silver Bayonet.

Flintloque/Silver bayonet cross over - part six

At last, some real paint.....

The eight Flintloque miniatures have been given an overall basecoat of brown, darker at the base and then lighter towards the top of the minis before I started with the flesh areas.

The dark brown/light brown basecoat is a new technique for me but so far I'm liking the effect and can't wait to get some colour on to the unit.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part five

Not much to see as painting minis black never produces great photos! But the eight Alternative Armies figures have now been based and undercoated and are now ready for painting.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part four

The Milliput bases have been further textured with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue. I should be undercoating the minis later today.

Tony

Flintloque/Silver bayonet cross over - part three

I'm still playing around with detailing the base and adding small Green Stuff additions, but enjoying the process. Hopefully you can see the (slow) progress and how I'm trying to build a unit of characters for my planned games of The Silver Bayonet.

I have no doubt that Flintloque minis from Alternative Armies is the way to go.

I've ordered my copy of The Silver bayonet via e-bay and hopefully should have it soon.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part two

My Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over miniatures have been based and subtly modified with some Green Stuff detailing in keeping with the SB theme and official SB minis.

I still have to build-up the groundwork on my 2p coin bases, but I'm happy with the (slow) progress and am enjoying the research and story-telling that these modified figures have inspired.

This new figure project has been great fun and I look forward to more updates.
