The Ancient Guild of Dragon Research

In an earlier post, I detailed some Magic Wands that I had made for my grandson's, but they are also interested in Dinosaurs and Dragons.

Today's post shows a plaque I made for Finley which has a Copper Dragon's Scale and a Talon.

The scale was hammered and polished before being mounted.

While the Talon was was simply glued in place and labelled.

They were great fun to make; The scale is a piece of crushed copper U bend that I picked up of the road and the talon was sculpted from a piece of blue foam before being clad with paper mache and modelling compound. Inspiration came from a children's illustrated book called DRAGONWORLD, Secrets of the Dragon Domain by S. A. Caldwell.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty three

Today's update features this group of five Flintloque Undead which were picked up secondhand and re-painted in my house style.

These are not my first Flintloque/Deadloque Undead. In fact I have quite a few and I have included these links to show just some;

I would expect to use the Witchlands Undead as Revenants or Ghosts.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty two

Another Ghost for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. This time a Nazgul from Games Workshop which was bought second-hand from Worcester Wargames. Not my best paint job, but it is another miniature based and painted.....

The mini was already painted, but I wanted a white/eerie colour scheme rather than the more traditional black. In addition I gloss varnished the mini prior to painting as I wasn't too sure of the quality of the metal.

The finished Ghost next to the long-suffering Flintloque RifleOrc for comparison. Both are mounted on to 2p coins with the groundwork built up from Milliput.

A couple of magic wands

In a change from my usual posts, here are a couple of magic wands and wand boxes that I built for my grandson's.

The first was carved from a lump of scrap wood given to me by Mal. He used the rest to build his garden dome greenhouse. It has a green agate stone mounted in the handle and a lions head carving on the main body.

The second was carved from an old garden umbrella pole and has the body of a monkey idol from a collectors toy series called 'Monster in my Pocket' pinned and glued to the handle.

They were great fun to make and paint. Both boxes were built from scrap card and covered in samples of textured wallpaper picked up for free with the red padding coming from a 50p cushion purchased in a charity shop. The ribbon was cut from some ex-Christmas decoration material.

I can report that both were well received.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty one

Another 'spares box' discovery. This time a plastic Owlbear miniature - I think from a Dungeons and Dragons play set and painted as a snowy owl.

The miniature was mounted on to a wooden disc with the groundwork built up from DAS then further textured with sieves stones and sand applied over PVA glue. I have also gloss varnished the model as I think this helps the acrylic paint to adhere better.

The final images shows the DnD Owlbear alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc for comparison. I'm not sure how I'll be using the finished Owlbear in my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet games, but enjoyed painting it.

Markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part four

Today's post shows how I made some re-load or shooting markers for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. The inspiration came when I spotted some laser cut acrylic markers on ebay. I was tempted to pick them up but then thought that I had seen similar flintlock pistols in a LEGO Pirates set. A quick Google search showed that there were indeed plastic flintlock pistols available via LEGO, but better versions were for sale from Playmobil and I then ordered five via ebay.

I used these wooden discs as bases. Each one is 35mm across and just 3mm thick.

The five plastic Playmobil flintlocks arrived with one missing a flint holder (top right), but not too worry as I could base this one with the flint on the base edge.

The five Playmobil pistols were glued in place and the groundwork built up with DAS modelling clay. The sixth pistol was found in my 'spares box'. I think it was from the Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean play set.

The groundwork was further textured with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue.

The final image shows the painting and varnishing done and just awaiting the static grass and base decoration to be added.

Total cost was just over £3.30 for six gaming markers and I think they look great and in keeping with my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet themes.

Miniature Wargames issue 467 - Bro Dawel cottage for Burrows & Badgers

This weekend I received the latest issue of Miniature Wargames (issue 467) which includes another modelling article written by me showing how I scratch built a 28mm scale copy of a Lilliput Lane cottage called Bro Dawel.

The model was built over a scrap cardboard core with DAS modelling clay and green foam then painted with acrylic paints and decorated with static grass and ground foam. For more information, pick up the latest issue of MW.

Further details can be found here.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project - part thirty

This is an Ogre Vampire Hunter for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project. The original resin model was picked up earlier this year from Alternative Armies. For more information see this link.

I have modified the mini with a scratch built blunderbuss, a new hat and a huge wooden mallet.

The blunderbuss fires wooden stakes, the mallet is for pounding these stakes into the Vampires heart and the bandoleer of garlic is for protection. Finally we have a silver crucifix tucked into his hatband. Basically everything a Vampire Hunter needs in one model.

The model was mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up with Milliput, sieved stones and sand before being undercoated in a dark brown basecoat.

Painting progressed in layers with drybrushing and washes.

The final image shows the varnished and decorated Vampire Hunter Ogre alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc for scale.

The model was great fun to convert, including all the traditional Vampire Hunter tools and accoutrements for him to track and kill agents of the night.

Guardian of the Shrine from W, S & S issue 118

Following on from my last post I spent some time setting up this small vignette following the scenario guidelines detailed in the Silver Bayonet scenario Guardian of the Shrine written by Joseph A. McCullough which was included in the latest issue of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy (issue 118).

I used the D&D Gnoll as the Guardian Beast and some Flintloque Elves/Ferach as the adventurers. The Shrine is the scratch built model that was featured in Miniature Wargames issue 464, for more details, see this post.

Now that I have posted the image and seen the final layout, I can't help thinking that I could have done better with the layout so will try to take some better images once I have had time to re-model the vignette.

Scratch Building Fences - Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy issue 118

The latest issue of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy, issue 118 has the second part of a mini series on building linear structures for the wargame table written by me. Part one showed how to build stone walls (see this link) and this article shows how I built some wooden fences from scrap materials I had on hand.

The fences were built from some thin wood (a fruit packing case picked up for free from Pershore retail market) cut into strips then individual fence panels and glued on to plastic card bases with the groundwork built up with DAS modelling clay.

For more information, you can pick up the latest issue of the magazine W, S & S issue 118.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty nine

This is the latest miniature for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet project - a Hobgoblin. The metal mini was bought for a couple of pounds from Worcester Wargames last month.

There were no markings on the slottabase to show who made this figure but I would identify it as a Gnoll.

The model was mounted on to a 30mm metal washer and supported with two strips of plastic card while the groundwork was built up from Milliput.

In a change from my usual painting technique, this Hobgoblin was painted over a white basecoat using various washes while the red areas were painted with Golden acrylic paints and then also washed and toned-down.

The final image shows the fully painted, varnished and decorated Silver Bayonet Hobgoblin alongside a Flintloque RifleOrc. The mini stands just over 40mm tall and works well with the larger Flintloque minis.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part twenty eight

Today's post shows some of my Flintloque inspired miniatures that are obvious stand-ins for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project.

The first image shows two stands of Games Workshop Snottlings alongside the earlier Snottlings or Red Caps featured in Sundays post. They are painted in the same colour schemes, but are mounted on to 2p coins rather than 1p.

The second image shows my Leprechauns which are modified Alternative Armies 1st HEVC Halfling Foot (57001) mounted on to 1p coins. for more information see this post.

The final picture features a conversion I did some time ago - Jack the Pumpkin Head once again, for more information, see this link. I think he would make a great Harvestman stand-in.
