A Roman Onager for Pax Bochemannica part two MW issue 491

Issue 491 of Miniature Wargames (March 2024) has part two of my two part series showing how I first built and then painted my extremely rare model of a Roman Onager (ass or catapult) for the game Pax Bochemannica. The model was built following plans found in the now out-of-print book Airfix Magazine Annual 6 and painted using a number of painting techniques to reproduce the exposed wooden structure. In addition I used matt, satin and gloss varnish to differentiate the different materials used in the original.

For more information issue 491 of MW is now available to purchase or you could check out this link.

I really like the colour of the iron fittings; a nice dark iron, with a bit of oxidization showing. It's perfect.

Thank you.

Have you still got the Airfix annual? Was the article written by Ron Wood?

Yes I do still have the magazine - I have all seven Airfix Magazine Annuals and yes it was written by Ron Wood.

My Dad! I was only two when he did that (he did occasional work for Airfix magazine) and I always loved that article and was really proud of seeing his name. He’ll. be well chuffed to see the onager still fights! Lovely job.

“It’s better than my original! He’s good” Ron Wood (2026).

I am pleased to hear that you like it and yes I also enjoyed re-scaling the Onager and modeling it. I happen to know that the Scorpio although not initially modelled by me was also based on the Airfix Magazine Annual article. For reference you can find images here. https://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2020/08/pax-boche-themed-month-part-nine.html I am not sure if this or the earlier Onager models are still available from Maveryc Games as the company has gone out of business.
