Commando Comics issue 5749 - Treachery and Treasure

This month the latest Napoleonic Wars themed war comic from Commando Comics has hit the shelves at WHSmiths. Treachery and Treasure issue 5749 is the latest Commando comic to feature Wellington's Riflemen in an adventure set in 1813 written by Andrew Knighton and illustrated by Manuel Benut.

I have a small collection of these Napoleonic themed Commando comics as I find them great reads and perfect inspiration for both Flintloque and Silver Bayonet gaming scenarios. For more information, see this link.

Miniature Wargames issue 493 - A Silver Bayonet Solo Adventure

I have previously posted about this issue of Miniature Wargames (see this link), but also think it is worthwhile to include a second post detailing one of the published articles.

A Clamour of Confused Wrong is a solo historical scenario for The Silver Bayonet written by Conrad Kinch. On first reading I found it a little confusing but persevered with it and now think that the playing card mechanics could work well in other SB solo games. I would not hesitate to to recommend the mechanics to anyone looking to play a solo game of SB or Flintloque.

Well done to Mr, Kinch for a very well thought out scenario and gaming mechanic. The magazine is currently available in WHSmiths for £5.99.

Flintloque - One figure at a time part nine

My Flintloque Todaroni conversion painted, varnished and based.

It's taken a while but the toad character is now ready for the gaming table. I've enjoyed the sculpting and painting process so much that I have actually contemplated picking up some more Todaroni figures from Alternative Armies but I already have a ton of unpainted Flintloque minis in my to-do collection so maybe not!

The Todaroni character is nearing completion, just a couple of tiny touches and he will be finished.

I have really enjoyed converting and painting this figure and look forward to painting more of my Flintloque lead mountain.

I also look forward to seeing the other competition entries.

The painting has progressed and we now have most of the figure finished. I still need to paint up some of the detail and then varnish the mini, but for now - here is the Flintloque Todaroni.

The painting continues.....

The basic tunic was painted in a dark bottle green colour with red facings and the bicorne was done in traditional tar black. Other details were picked out with various acrylic paints and washes.

My favourite part of the painted mini is his tongue which I painted in a pinkish red!

The painting started with the green flesh. I used a variety of different green paints to build-up the deep green skin colour then washed the area with both black and green washes. The eyes were originally picked out in white but later tinted yellow.

The modified miniature was spray painted with black rattle-can paint, then sprayed from above with grey paint and finally drybrushed with white on the upper surfaces. My version of Zenithal Basecoating.

The second image shows the model from the rear all ready for painting proper.

With the major sculpting/conversion work complete, I textured the Milliput base with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue. I will now be undercoating or basecoating the miniature so expect an update soon. 

I had thought of adding either a bayonet or sword to the right hand, but in the end decided to leave it off.

Flintloque - One figure at a time - part two

Progress on my Alternative Armies Todaroni character continues with more Milliput and Green Stuff. The modified figure has now been mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up from Green/Grey Milliput.

In the second image, you can see how I have added the traditional Todaroni headgear feather - again sculpted with Green Stuff.

The miniature has been inspired by a comment and competition being launched on the Orcs in the Webbe Facebook page, where you can take any Flintloque figure and modify or convert it. For more information, see this link.

Flintloque - One figure at a time. A new project.

Over the last couple of weeks there has been some talk on various Flintloque groups, particularly Orcs in the Webbe about a possible Todaroni themed challenge based around the new Todaroni releases from Alternative Armies. When nothing came of the challenge, I thought I would search through my Flintloque 'bits box' and see what I could find.....

As a result of the search, I came across these two identical models of Sharke from one of the AA boxed sets. I have already painted up one for my collection and thought he would be a good base for a conversion.

In the same 'bits box' I had this single Todaroni, one of the original AA releases and a figure I had both based and started painting. Of note is the fact that it was the only AA Todaroni I had in my to-paint collection!

'Off with his head'. I used a jeweller's saw to remove both heads and some files to clean up the figure before pinning and gluing the miniature. I have used both Milliput and Green Stuff to tidy-up the join. The most difficult part of the conversion was deciding on the placement of the new head - I wanted to keep the 'head down and hunched stance of the original Todaroni sculpt.

'Hiding the join'. You can see how I have used more Green Stuff to add detail to the front and the rear of the figure. This was the first part of the conversion and I will now need to wait for the Green Stuff to fully harden before adding even more detail.

I've not converted or painted a Flintloque miniature for some time and the Orcs in the Webbe posts have re-kindled my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet interest and I look forward to posting more.

Dampf's Modelling Page featured on Orcs in the Webbe

Earlier this week I was contacted via this Blog to inform me that my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross-over project was being featured on the Orcs in the Webbe Facebook page - for more information, see this link.

As regular readers and followers know Flintloque was one of my earliest wargame loves and I continue to use the game for inspiration and paint the miniatures. I would hope that this continues for some time to come.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part forty one

The miniatures were painted and varnished before I added some static grass tufts to the bases to finish them off. I think they are perfect as a Silver Bayonet group - A Demon gentleman with his Goblin retinue and I can't wait to see how they behave on the table top.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part forty

The first real colour on these miniatures was the flesh areas which were picked out and highlighted with a home-made Snakebite Leather mix and white. Subsequent highlighting was done by adding more white to the palette.

The clothes were painted in subdued colours with just one or two highlights. I wanted a more muted colour scheme with these minis. I have used a touch of wash over the flesh areas to define the sculpted detail.

For most of the painting I have used either a Rosemary & Co. Sable/Synthetic mix brush or a GW detail brush as I find it is better for the really fine detailing such as eyes and teeth.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty nine

With the figures based and the groundwork textured, I undercoated the models with a grey spray-can primer which helped to unify the group.

Next, I gave the six models a basecoat of dark brown acrylic paint which was then lightened to give a Zenithal-style finish and help to highlight the sculpted detail.

In the past this basecoat would have been pure black, but I have adjusted my painting style to be less stark and I now find the dark brown base with highlights to give a better painted finish.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty eight

It has been some time since I posted about my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project but a recent visit to The West Midlands Military Show (See earlier posts) saw me pick up a blister pack of The Silver Bayonet Goblins (TSB011) and combining them with the Demon Gentleman (Alternative Armies) meant I could now work on a new group of themed miniatures.

The Goblins were mounted on to 1p coins and the Demon on to a 2p coin. The groundwork was built up with Terracotta Milliput and then further textured with sieved stones and sand applied over PVA glue. The image below shows the group ready for undercoating or priming.

The figures have been used straight from the box with no alterations or modifications (a rare occurrence for me) as I was looking forward to the painting of this group - I have had the AA Demon for a couple of years and been wondering how I could use him. With this group of Goblins I now have a leader and his diminutive followers all ready for action in a game of The Silver Bayonet.

The White Church - Miniature Wargames issue 470

Issue 470 of Miniature Wargames (June 2022) has the first part of a two part series showing how I built and painted this Greek inspired White Church. Part one shows how the model was constructed from cardboard, blue foam and DAS modelling clay and next months article will give details of how it was finished and painted.

The partially finished White Chirch has sat patiently on my work bench for some years, but was completed and painted to be used in a Silver Bayonet scenario.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty seven

I have chosen eight Flintloque miniatures and after adding some additional texture to the 2p bases, I have undercoated them with a grey spray rattle-can paint.

Not much to add or show at this moment, but I'll keep the Blog updated with progress on the Flintloque/Silver Bayonet project.

Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over - part thirty six

It's about time I started a new group of minis for my Flintloque/Silver Bayonet cross over project and I have chosen a Spanish force.

I picked up this box set many years ago - Spanish or Dark Elf Guerrillas, but upon opening the box I thought the miniatures looked too small and didn't fit in with what I was looking for. I'm sure I'll find a use for these, but for now it was back to the drawing board.....

This is a selection of metal figures from my 'spares box' and I've based them on to 2p coins with the groundwork built-up with Milliput. You can see where I have added small modifications to a couple of sculpts, but in the main they are 'standard' Alternative Armies Dark Elves or Ferach.

I'll be adding more texture to the bases soon and then it's onto painting.

I have added some scratch built detail and painted him in this pale blue and brown/red trousers scheme for use with my Spanish.

He is mounted on to a 2p coin with the groundwork built up with Milliput epoxy putty.
