Pax Boche Themed Month - part twenty-six

The converted Boche matt varnished and with static grass added to the base. He still looks a little glossy, but, I'm happy with the finished model and he is unique, being modified from a resin Boche - a rare miniature and then having had his head replaced with the head from a Dream Blades miniature.

The image below, shows the rear or back of the mini and you can see how well the new head and the Green Man leaves fit.

The final image of this mini (and the themed month) shows the Green Man Boche alongside the rearing metal bear to give an idea of the size of both miniatures. The Boche is mounted onto a 1p coin and the rearing Bear a 2p coin.

Now that the Pax Boche themed month is over, I'd be interested in hearing comments from readers on what you think of themed months. I quite like the idea and it certainly focuses the mind as well as helping to reduce my Lead Mountain. The only figure purchased for this themed month was the Reaper Dwarf Druid (which was bought via E-bay) all the other figures were patiently waiting on my to-do shelf or in the case of the Noman Orc Legionaries, still in the original Pax Bochemannica box set stored in the attic.

As you can see, the painting of this converted resin Boche has advanced. I have gloss varnished the painted mini and once it is fully dry, I will matt varnish it and decorate the base.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part twenty-four

The latest miniature is a converted resin Boche from the two-handed weapons blister pack (I'm not sure these were even in wide distribution) . I have used the 'Green Man' head from a Dream Blades collectable miniature to change the head and make this unique mini. the head change was a simple 'off with his head' and supergluing the new one in place. Any filling was done with superglue and some Milliput (there wasn't that much).

the miniature is mounted onto a 1p coin with the groundwork built up from Milliput epoxy putty. Here is the mini from the rear showing how good the fit was.

The groundwork has been further textured with some sand applied over PVA glue while the club was cut down from the Dream Blades miniature and trimmed to fit the open hand.

 

I have undercoated the figure with a dark brown base, mixed from Charred Brown and black and mounted it onto a cork stopper miniature holder ready for painting.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part twenty-three

This metal casting has been on my to-do list for ages. I thought it would work well as a large familiar for the Dwarf Druid figure. The bear is mounted onto a 2p coin with the groundwork built up from Milliput and some fine sand. In this first image, the bear has been basecoated with a very dark brown mixed from Charred Brown (Vallejo Game Color) and black.

Painting progressed quickly with lots of drybrushing and the odd wash. The detail painting around the head and particularly the mouth didn't take that long and the base has been painted dark brown, highlighted with a lighter tone and the odd stone picked out in grey, highlighted with white.

The final image shows the Reaper Dwarf alongside, giving an idea of the size of this miniature bear. Stay safe and

The Dwarf Druid is now finished. The base has been decorated with some static grass applied over PVA glue. The image below shows the rear or back of the figure.

The flesh areas were built-up in the same way as the earlier Boche, basically building up lighter tones and colours over a dark base. I like to tidy-up the black or black/dark brown areas as I go along and you can see this with this mini.

The robe was painted to match pale linen and again built up with a dark base and layers of highlighting.

The headgear was painted to represent a young stag.

While the scythe was painted as aged wood, allowing some of the dark brown basecoat to show through in the shadows.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part nineteen

Another post but this time, it's not a Pax Bochemannica miniature. The metal miniature is a Dwarf Druid 03216 from Reaper Miniatures which I plan on using as a Boche Druid proxy.

The two part metal miniature comes with a cute little badger which I might use as a familiar.

After I had attached the blade of the scythe, I mounted the Dwarf onto a 1p coin (the same as the rest of my Boche), built up the base or groundwork with Milliput and further textured the base with sand (applied over PVA glue).

The mini was undercoated in a dark brown colour mixed from Charred Brown (Vallejo) and black.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part eighteen

The bases have been painted in a dark brown colour with odd stones picked out in a grey, highlighted with white. I have varnished the miniatures with both gloss varnish (for strength) and matt varnish before re-varnishing the metallic areas with gloss.

Here you can see the finished models with the bases decorated with static grass (applied over PVA glue).

The five Auxiliary Hobgoblin Archers from Maveryc Games, painted and finished. The only amendment was thickening up the shafts of the bows with some superglue and accelerator as I thought the original resin sculpts looked a little fragile.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part seventeen

Progress has been better than I had expected. The flesh areas have been painted with a red base (as seen on the official Pax Bochemannica or Maveryc sites).

I chose green tunics, similar to the colour worn by the auxiliary Ogre. While the detail painting used lots of grey and brown colours.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part sixteen

I spray painted the minis with Tamiya grey spray primer, then added some Vallejo plastic filler to some of the areas I had re-modelled or to hide seam lines (the white areas).

All five archers were then basecoated black in preparation for painting the metallic areas. I used Chainmail and silver drybrushing for the metallics and will be be painting the red flesh areas next.

Models For Sale on Ebay

I have three buildings for sale on Ebay. The first is the Fort at Amiel which featured in Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy issue 104 - September 2019. A 28mm scale scratch-built look-out.

Next we have The Thatched Hovel which also featured in Wargames Soldiers & Strategy - this time issue 101 from March 2019. The model is a highly modified Christmas decoration with a DAS modelling clay thatched roof. Another 28mm scale model.

Lastly, we have the Railway Station from El Alamein. a modified 28mm scale Sarissa MDF kit with revised interior and a plastic card roof. This model featured in my Pen & Sword book Wargame Terrain and Buildings - North Africa and The Middle East.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part fifteen

The latest Blog post features these superbly cast resin models from Maveryc Games/Pax Bochemannica - Eastern or Hobgoblin Auxiliary Archers. They come four to a pack, but I was given an additional pre-production casting, so as you can see I have five. They have been mounted onto 2p coins with Milliput epoxy putty used to build up the bases. I used scraps of plastic card under the miniatures feet as they come without cast-on bases and would have looked strange when placed alongside my other Pax Boche minis which do have cast-on bases.

I have also used superglue and accelerator to thicken-up the bow shafts as I thought the originals looked a little too thin and brittle and would be an obvious point of damage if left as originally cast.

28mm scale Roman Mile Fort featured in Miniature Wargames

Miniature Wargames issue 449 (September 2020) features a scratch-built Roman Mile Castle built by me. The model is a near copy of the old Airfix 1/72nd scale plastic model, but this time built to 28mm or 1/56th scale. In this issue you see how I planned and built the model using blue foam and an Ikea coffee table, next month you can see how I painted and finished it off. For more information see this link.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part thirteen

The two character figures and the last legionaries all based, varnished and decorated. These are the last of my original Pax Bochemannic box set to be painted-up some five years after the Boche miniatures were painted!

The final image shows two of the miniatures alongside the resin Ogre Auxiliary spearman. which I painted some time ago. I'm not sure if this minis is still available.....

Pax Boche Themed Month - part twelve

Using the same techniques as the earlier Pax Bochemannica miniatures, I started with the metallic areas.

Then onto the flesh or skin areas. The only difference here was that I painted the hobgoblin, Wort with a distinct red flesh colour as seen in the original box set illustrations.

The main tunic colours continued with the deep red seen in the earlier tutorials, but the leader Maximum Voluum was painted with a white tunic.

Pax Boche Themed Month - part eleven

These three metal figures are from the original Pax Bochemannica box set. They are the last of the original box set that need painting up - the leader, a hobgoblin character and a Noman Legionnaire.

All three have been mounted onto 2p coins with the groundwork first built up from Milliput and then further textured with sand applied over PVA glue. I used a spare oval shield for the hobgoblin and some acrylic paste to add some fine detail or hide mould lines (the white areas). I also used superglue to add some bulk to the hobgoblins legs as I thought they were an obvious weak point being so thin just above the shoes. The legionnaires Pilum has been rebuilt with some stronger piano wire as once again I thought it was another weak point in the metal casting.

The three figures were then undercoated in a dark brown/black acrylic colour after I had spray painted them with Tamiya grey primer. Once again I am using my cork stopper figure holder (more on these in another post).

Pax Boche Themed Month - part ten

A quick update today - the base has been decorated with both static grass (applied over PVA glue) and some static grass clumps (this time glued in place with superglue). The wooden mallet was scratch-built from a length of cocktail stick and a section of kebab stick, an easy modelling project that I think adds to this simple model.

The bases have been painted and the minis varnished. I just need to add some decoration to the bases and glue the spear in place.

The Scorpio was painted at the same time with simple base colours and some washes.
